Will a 96 ecu work with a 92 eg33

Well I have a lead on a 96 ecu wich is obd2 just like my car. I have the 92 svx harness now getting merged so I cannot back out of that. Will it work? If so what do I have to splice into the harness for sensors? Thanks guys I know I am a PIA!

Re: Will a 96 ecu work with a 92 eg33

Depends on the chassis I believe.. I think you can install a 92 engine into a 96 chassis and it will work. I don't think you can just put a 96 ECU into a 92 chassis because 96 was OBDII and the wiring and engine management was different.

Basically your ECU will be looking for signals that aren't there and trying to send signals that may have nowhere to go. Think O2 sensors 92 have 2 pre cat. OBDII have 3 (2 pre one post cat). Hope that helps.

EDIT: When I initially read this I must have read too quickly. It sounded like you wanted to put a 96 ECU in a 92 car... sorry

Your question is confusing. You say you have an OBDII car which would make it a 96 or 97. The ECUs for these cars are essentially the same. They are NOT the same as the 92-95. I would be very hesitant to try to install a 92 wiring harness in a 96 or 97 vehicle. The 92 and 93 wiring harnesses are the same but there are differences in the 92-93 and the 94-95 and significant differences in the 92-95 and 96-97 harnesses. As the previous post indicated, you can install a 96-97 engine in a 92-94. I may be able to look up some differences if you have specific questions. I suspect that the engine harness is very similar, but there would be significant differences pertaining to the ECU.

I believe he is putting a EG33 engine into a 99 legacy, I think you might need the 96-97 wiring or you will need lots of patience and splicing your factory with the 92 harness wiring. Thats speculation on my part based on responses.

Re: Will a 96 ecu work with a 92 eg33

That is what I am working on and I can get around emmisions, but before I finish up the wiring for the 92 ecu and harness I was wondering what other sensors are added to the obd2 Eg33. I guess I need to go over the wiring diagram for a 96-97 Svx. Anyone have one?

no 96-97 here but I believe the getting around emissions is if you have a obd2 car, your legacy, and you run a obd1 ecu, the obd2 scanners will obviously not work. If you are able to put a obd2 ecu into your car with this engine swap you will be able to access the obd2 thus it will pass emissions.

I think the main difference will be a 3rd O2 sensor, behind the main cat. Your legacy should have the cat there so you will just need to splice wiring, after you find the pin locations.

Just an FYI. At this point in time emissions testing in NEPA is pretty easy to pass. Its a visual check of your emissions components and your gas cap is tested for leaks thats pretty much it. No sniffer tests For now at least

Really that is great to know. This way incase I decide to sell (much further down the road) I will have a swap that will pass emissions. Good info and I am going to have to find a diagram for the 96-97 ecu and pin out the wiring for the 3rd sensor.

Does that mean that they will not plug in an emissions computer detector? I guess all they will do is check for cats (which will be there), look for exhaust leaks, and check for cels?

I can't answer for sure I don't think that is part of the emissions testing as of now but I will check with my brother hes a VW mechanic with an inspection liscence.
