NTE resistors

Hi. I want to change the trans resistor behind the batt and I see in the how-to sect that I need an NTE 25w 15 ohm resistor. I've checked auto zone and napa and they don't carry it. I can order it online for $1.05 but the shipping is $10. Does anyone else know where I can pick one of these up? I'll try radio shack tomorrow.

You require simply a 25 watt 15 ohm resistor. Any make will do the job. An electronics shop handling hobby stuff, or radio spares, should have one. Do nor concern yourself regarding the brand name.

what is the desired effect of the change in resistance?harder shifts?softer shifts? quicker?

I think this is one of those "replace the old worn-out part" type deals instead of a performance benefit. Any performance benefit is going to be from the fact it's a new resistor that has the correct resistance, instead of an old one that's cracked, etc...

Yeah, this is strictly "returning normal operation of your transmission" stuff. I had a member send me one because in my town the only electronics shops (radio shack and Ohm Electronics) didn't carry anything like what I needed. Now that I've moved to southern California, I can drive over to Fry's or Micro Center and pick up a billion variations of the exact resistor I need. So it really depends on where you are.

If you buy the resistor on your own instead of buying the replacement OEM part from Subaru, you do need to modify the leads. The resistor on the car has both leads on one side, whereas the NTE resistor has one lead on each side. So you have to solder wires to the leads, then solder the wires to the bracket's connector.

Hey guys, has anyone from Australia properly done the resistor swap with good results????

The largest wirewound resistor I can get my hands on is a 17w 15ohm

or an aluminium clad resistor which needs cooling and a heatsink which is 25w and 15ohm

So has anyone fixed up their resistor and what did you use.

I searched all aver town for a resister and couldn't find anything close to 25w15 Ohm so I went ahead and ordered it from MCM. $7.86 shipped. This morning my car wouldn't start - dead batt so I figured it' would be a good day to change the resistor.

I pulled the battery out and sure enough, no resistor to be found. It's a 92 model. I even broke down and showed my wife the pic of the resistor in the How-to section and had her look for it. She couldn't find it either. There is a vacuum operated switch where the resistor should be.

Does anyone have any idea of where else I could look for this resistor?

I took the battery down to advance auto and still had a month left on the warrantee. Free battery for me :-)

Looks like someone put the Small Car Shift Kit where your resistor should be.

That's no good. Means you'll be needing the resistor assembly as well, so the really bad news is you're probably better off just ordering the whole thing...

For very good reason, would you please advise why you wanted top change the resistor, e.g. are/were you experiencing transmission problems, If so exactly what concerned you?

Hi Trevor,

Tranny seems fine but I am getting 16 flashes when I start the car and Tom suggested checking the resistor.
