My New Tow Vehicle (and daily driver)

Here is the vehicle that I bought to tow my new race car (pictures later as the build progresses). 2006 Outback L L Bean H6.

Will pick it up Wednesday. Need to get transmission cooler, electrical kit with brake controller and hitch installed.

don't you think that might be a little bit small to tow something like a car with?

Nice car don't get me wrong but I'm not too sure I would tow something too heavy with that.

Race car weighs 1100 lbs. with fluids. Trailer (already specced out) weighs 950 lbs. H6 Outback is rated for 3000 lbs towing. Figure I can throw on a spare set of wheels and some tools and still be under 2400 lbs. Am looking for a tranny cooler.

You are only saying that to make Bill feel bad about himself!

Bill, if YOU had stayed in school and got a GOOD job you too could get a cool race car and not have to pose in those human condom ads.

thats just a hair more than what I've towed with my 2.2 sedan without trailer brakes... it pushed a bit, but I managed with the MT. Shotgun's heavier H6 with bigger tires & brakes and trailer brakes as well shouldn't break a sweat!

Nice car there! I'm looking to get the same for jess, she is thinking more about a forester now though... we'll see.

I wouldn't to with it on a regular basis without trailer brakes. Then again, I wouldn't to anything on a regular basis without trailer brakes.

Getting electric trailer brakes. NJ law requires brakes on all 4 trailer wheels, so I've been told.

Waiting for some pic's of racer myself as the build progresses. It will basically be a street legal version of this car. Add projector motorcycle headlamps, turn signals, a demountable windshield with wipers, center and driver's side rear view mirrors, and cycle fenders on the front.

What major factors determine trailer capacity? I think that my Blazer is rated at 6000 lbs.

I doubt it unless its over 3000lbs which is when pa requires brakes. I'd be looking into a single axle trailer if I were you. Much easier to drive and live with. Can get a 5000lb single axle trailer. I'd say your biggest problem with a Legacy is finding a suitable hitch set up which is rated above 2000lbs and 200lbs of tongue weight. Remember, the SVX is rated to tow 3500lbs.

The car really couldn't do it with lesser tires or more than a few sprinkles on the ground

I have yet to get a real good look at them underneath, but it looks like the new OB has been built with the hitch issue in mind. At first glance it looks like the hitch attaches to the "rails" more like they did on Jeep Cherokee and the like. I would also agree with the one axle statement being much easier to live with and handle 'cept I would always have to worry about blowing a tire pros and cons to each i guess

I am still up in the air about one or two axles. I've been getting advice all over the board on this. Several people have said that 2 axle trailers are much more stable to pull, even though they are more difficult to deal with by hand when unloaded. An issue I have is resale value of the trailer. The 2 axle version has a GVWR of 5000 lbs, instead of 3500. That makes it adequate for all sorts of cars, including Porsches of all stripes. I have to make a decision by the end of the week, when I finalize my trailer order.

My 5MT SVX wouldn't be a good candidate for a tow vehicle.
