Photography people...

I know there are some of you Photography Buffs here... so here we go.

I got handed a Nikon D40 Kit on Thanksgiving. Here is my first real outing with it...

Lake Lure, NC.

OK, so here we go. My wife and I got married here 2 years ago, we go back every anniversary. We were a few days late this year because the weather sucked on the actual date. So here we are today, and my new Nikon D40.

I took about 120 photos, these are the most noteworthy, IMHO.

Critique away! (re-sized/converted from RAW to JPG and no PP)

1- Look, a lake!

2- Same as above, only zoomed in... and from a slightly different angle

3- Pavilion where my wife and I got married ( I wish those bushes weren't there...)

4- Wife + Son looking at the water

5- Wife + Son on a rock

6- Kinda cool shot here... was trying to keep the sun out of the sensor...

7- Path next to the Pavilion

8- Look, a rock!

9- Boardwalk around the Pavilion

10- Shooting kids is TOUGH... Look, he's escaping!

11- View from the Pavilion up to Chimney Rock

12- Look, a bush!

13- Wife in the Pavilion

14- Wife + Son, same place we took a picture two years ago

15- You tell me?

16- Me + Son on Rock... what's with all the rocks?

17- Look, a fountain!

18- Cheapest gas in the country!

Nice...

Those are some nice photographs. May I ask what lens you were using?

A couple of those looked a bit overexposed, but not something beyond some simple adjustment in Photoshop.

Hope you don't mind, but I did a little tinkering with pic #2.

Not that I'm all that great at photography either, but I'm working on it...

It's the Kit Lens... 3x 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens

And I wish I could afford Photoshop. (Would Elements suffice?)

I dont mind, I want to be able to improve my photos like that. (Looks great, by the way!)

And I agree that several are overexposed.

Like I said, no post processing was done, because I am a total noob.

And for a side by side comparison...

This could be because they are pretty small, Tom

Good pics Chris, and very nice family BTW.

The funniest thing I ever tried to shoot was an owl in the zoo in Dublin. The autofocus had a lag time of probably about 1/2 second, or maybe less. The problem was the owl seemed to be able to swivel his head through 180 degrees in about 1/10th seconds

It took a few tries to get even one shot

Joe

Nice pictures but what is with the "Rocks"? Did you have an incident as a child on Holloween as in the imortal words of Charlie Brown. "I got a rock"!

Very nice Chris. You have some great starter equipment there and a beautiful family.

It is very difficult to capture children. Typically the younger, the more difficult. Your best bet to successfully capture the image is to get the composition down in your head before you even pick up the camera as well as prefocusing before shooting.

There's a lot of good websites to go to. My favorite ones are fredmiranda.com for camera equipment reviews as well as their forums that show other people's work such as as people, landscape, etc.

Your pictures are very nice. The only critique I have is that taking portraits or pictures in general during midday usually is the most difficult time, because shadows become very harsh. The best time to take portraits are right before the sun starts to set, because the lighting becomes very even and it leaves for more flattering lighting. The shadows can sometimes bring out unwanted features and make them more pronounced.

If that can't be avoided, one way to go around it is to shoot in a shaded area with very little open area exposing the extremely bright conditions.

Try playing with fill flash to minimize those shadows. There are plenty of other websites with tips and tricks such as photography-on-the.net

Not jacking your thread, but these are some pictures during midday using fill flash and i'll show you the midday picture without flash.

No flash, broad daylight

Manual mode, flash set to full power and camera exposed for scenery

These are a little more advanced techniques so your results may vary, but working with lighting is the thing to master.

If you're into reading, a great book to look at is Understanding Exposure

Interesting...

the center picture looks like you photoshopped the subject into the photo.
