oh no... Tranny gone?

Ugh... Last night on the highway, my tranny started slipping out of third and fourth :-( I got off the highway, checked the fluid, it was unburnt and full. Tried to go again... same thing. It will shift up to third and fourth, as long as it is flat or downgrade. If I hit a hill or try to accelerate it will slip...

So I stay off the highway and drive home in second.

This is an SOA reman I got about 17 months ago. It has a cooler installed and has had the Mobil 1 synth fluid changed every 10k. I occasionally drive it hard, but I hammer my Legacy harder, that has 220k on the original 4eat, It doesn't have a cooler and I have never changed the fluid.

thoughts on the drive long drive home....
- Adjust the brake band... see if that holds it together for a while?
- Flush out the coolers and front lines, not the tranny itself
- Start to gather the pieces for a 4.11 auto or five speed conversion (which 5 spd is best?)
- If the first two fixes do nothing to hold it together while I prepare for the five speed or 4.11, I'll throw in the FWD we pulled out of the race car to keep it driveable in the meantime

Here are my replies;
- I'll get that nut for the diff
- Bite me
- She needs a front diff, mine is still good.

I know Ben is kidding and all, but to put everybody's mind at ease and keep the vultures away, I WILL NOT be turning this into a parts car.

Thank you Dave. I've heard horror stories of people sending SVXs to the junkyard when they get up in miles (100K+) and only have one thing go wrong (like a bad wheel bearing).

That's the high clutch. Mine failed the same way but just not as quick.

Yep - high clutch - got me too. Mine lasted about 2 weeks of slipping before ultimate death.

Sorry about that Dave. It is the high clutch that is slipping, either because it is worn out, or the line pressure is low. I would tend to think it is the line pressure that is low, as the clutch has not had time to wear since it was rebuilt. You could try disconnecting the resistor, to increase the pressure at light throttle, to see if the clutch holds. If it does, I would get the line pressure checked to see.
The trouble could be caused by the pump, pick-up filter, throttle position sensor, ect.

Harvey.

hehehe, I got parts for the 5speed swap. Anyway. I am sorry to hear your trans has begun to give way. My old 4heat did the same thing with the cooler and all. $th started to go and 200 miles later i began losing 3rd after 4th was completely gone. I am always a phone call away and I am always looking to get rid of some parts. Like a driveshaft and a rear(4.11 of course)

yeah, thanks for laughing at my pain....

Other than the shaft and rear, what do I need?? Modified pedal box, shifter, modified crossmember?? Do you have any of those?

The trans is fairly easy to find at one of the local yards...

well depending on what Jesse is gonna need to make my new one, I may an extra Xmember too. Pedals are easy and finding a good trans is not that hard either. Just do some research, there is a 17 year old kid doing a swap 20 minutes from me. I think with a little effort you can pull it off too. Just go to junk yard and flag a parts car and go to town on it

Maybe you can have the 3rd manual crapistion from our Legacy. Heck why don't you just part the Americanmade POS (waxed it today so I got to see all the horrible fit and finish our fellow Americans can do). God bless America!

Sorry to hear about your tranny. Your car seemed so nice and solid when you gave me a lift. I guess with trannies, ya just never know. At least you have the knowledge to deal with the problem.

I guess that's another good thing about living here in southrn Saskatchewan where it's REALLY flat.
