Almost home!

Just wanted to let you all know that Randy just called home from the US/Canada border. He is having trouble gaining web access from his palm pilot and asked me to post a short message to let you know that his trip has gone well and the SVX is all that he thought it would be. He is approximately 7 hours from home but that could turn into a few more hours depending on how things go at the border crossing. He has to "export" the car from the US and then "import" it into Canada. If all goes well, he should be home just in time to shower and then take me out for Mother's Day brunch! I'm sure you can expect an update from him tomorrow. Thanks for checking in.
Donna.

Great Story!

Canuck,

Congratulations on both new editions to your family. There's nothing like that SVX thrill on the highway.

I love the whole story. Braving the polyestered hordes on the way to Sin City to run a red repaint across the border back home for your lovely wife. All that's missing is an Elvis impersonating mystic on the side of a desert road whispering about H6 and torque split symetry.

Donna, your husband is bringing you a pretty red rose for Mother's Day.

Canuck, safe journey, God speed, nice style!

We're Home

Well Gang, I made it home.

As my wife explained, I lost web access via my phone some place in Idaho and didn't get it back until I was across the border. That's the reason I wasn't posting.

The drive through Idaho was uneventfull. I stopped and did some Mothers Day shopping. I want my wife to look her best in her new car. The drive through Montana was great! Ya know, I think there was a time a few years ago where Montana didn't have a speed limit. Fines were only given out if you were driving too fast for the cars ability. It would have been clear sailing for me. I don't know how many of you have driven through the mountains in Montana but the drive has steep grades, winding roads with some hairpin turns and breath-taking scenery; SVXs were made for Montana, or is it the other way around?

I didn't have too much trouble getting across the border. I had done my homework on the required paper-work so it was pretty smooth. It took between 60 an 90 min. And of course I had to pay the GST and duty on the car.

Once into Albreta it was getting pretty late into the night, about 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. I didn't realize it but I was getting really tired. I was starting to see things on the road that weren't there. I decided that I should look for a place to stop for a break. Just then I came over a rise and there was a herd of deer right in the middle of the road. With some fancy steering and a lot of luck I swerved and missed them all. It woke me up fast, but I decided that I should still stop.

I didn't make it home in time to go our for Mothers Day brunch with my kids and my wife but I think she forgave me the instant she saw the car. She immediatley took it for a spin and my oldest daughter who is 15 and has her learners licence said "I call that car when you die." Everyone lovers it!

I spent the rest of the day doing yardwork with my new baby sitting out front on the driveway to show her off.

The lack of sleep finally caught up with me. I crashed about 5:30. I woke up at around 6:30 realizing that I hadn't been to church yet. Mass was at 7:00 and it's a 40 minute drive to town for Sunday night mass - NOT IN AN SVX THOUGH! I made it there with 5 min. to spare!

Well I guess that's about the end of my story. I'll send some pics tonight.

Now that this car is tucked nicely into the garage in my wifes parking spot, it's time to plan my trip to Scranton, PA to pick up my 93 Anniversary Edition.

Stay tuned ......

Glad to hear you got her home. Thanks for the cool story! Can you please either post here or send a PM about the border crossing?

Here is what I understand you need AT the border: originals of the title and registration, plus bill of sale. (All this stuff had to be sent to the crossing you'll use at least 72 hrs (3 business days) beforehand). Then you have to fill out the Vehicle Export Form 1 and keep it in your car until it passes inspection. Fees include 7%, + 6.1% as it's japanese, $100 for the air conditioning, and the standard $182 charge?

One question, what is a manufacturer's statement of compliance label? Does the SVX come from the factory with one?

I must now check out your car Some day I will PM you with my phone #. Looks like my car wont be back here until the weekend after May long (28th, 29th).

And here she is at home (see attached).

Now I need to start looking for parts (hood & trunk struts, an ash tray cover and a power steering pump).

Dza, you are exactely right on with respect to the import costs and procedure. And interesting fact though, nobody seemed to care about the "recall clearance letter" from Subaru USA. Nobody on either side gave me a hard time. Just make sure you have the originals of all the docs you faxed in advance.

The compliance plate is located on the body of the car where the drivers door meets the body. Open the drivers door and it will be by your right shin. Nobosy asked to see it, I just had to get the date of production off of it.

I'll PM you with respect to the process of meeting the Transport Canada specs and provincial safety specs.

RJ

Awesome, thanks for the info.

Your car looks awesome. Your house looks super nice too! I live in Uplands, and let me tell you my house does not look a thing like that, heh.

Edit: Also, you have SK plates on already. Those just stolen from the van?
