remove the alternator and just pop the A/C off and it is really easy.

I tried that last time. The A/C wouldn't come off. All the bolts were removed and it was free, but was wedged somehow. Just couldn't get it to pop out.

the bolts you need to remove are the ones holding the mount to the engine. Pull the whole assembly off.

Both of my knock sensors looked about the same as yours, David! (see my locker for pics of the removal and installation process). I'm guessing the wiring was extremely brittle on yours, too.
I found that using a "small part grabber" (you know, that thing in your toolbox that you only use when you drop a bolt down into the dark recesses of the engine...) extremely helpful when it came to installing the driver's side sensor (again, pics in my locker).
I used a racheting box end on the passenger's side and a socket on a universal joint and extension for the driver's side (you can come down between the intake manifold runners). I only removed the alternator.
