Hi, welcome to the network. There have been many threads about this problem and if you do a search on wheel bearings it will bring up a wealth of information.
One of the problems in the past is that the bearings came packed with a grease that was for storage and shipping only. If it was not cleaned off and new grease replaced, the bearing would fail in a short time. This problem may have been changed, but I would not chance it myself, and would use a high quality grease to repack it. If it is over torqued, it can cause the bearing to fail as well. Good luck and do a search to find out additional information and the torque to use.

The rear bearing housings may also be distorted from removing the bearings and replacing them. I would recommend that you have the housings replaced at this time. Check my locker under maintenance/bearings for an invoice with the proper subaru part numbers for these parts.

re: wow $1100
wow $1100 is alot of money for bearings i think. i printed up the instructions from here, bought the bearings, and found a mechanic that i trusted that knew what he was doing (and was willing to follow the directions printed out). he did and each bearing for a fee of $160-190. i can't remember which it was. but definitely less than $200 for labor charge. the bearing was around $80. you may want to find a good mechanic if possible in your area.

Gep,
Rosie and I are originaly from the west side of Manhattan (Hell's Kitchen). Now we live in northern DE. Are you near Belmont raceway? There used to be a great sports car road course out there. Competed in a few SCCA weekenders out there, many many years ago. My advice to you is to buy a set of shop manuals and educate yourself. It's the most cost effective $200 you can spend on your SVX service. Even if you don't do the work yourself, you can talk inteligently to the person that does do the work. It will also help you to understand why service costs so much. Usually it's because you have to get other things out of the way in order to work on something. That takes time and time is money. Good Luck with your fight with your dealer. Keep your letter to SOA strong but nice not nasty. Choose the language and style to make it look professional. Especially point out the part about hesitating to buy another Subaru because of the bad dealer experience. Good Luck.
