Happened to mine when I got the car first. Had to strip the column down to get everything tightened up before the ignition would operate every time.

I second that. I had the exact same problem.

First of all, run the self diagnostic to see what code it gives you. More than likely it'll turn out to be an O2 sensor.

NO check engine lights at all. Son checked the security bolts on the steering column....they were fine. It did act up again. I just held the key in the "start" position and after a second or 2 it started.

When you say you held it there do you mean cranking it over or was it just like a delay befor the starter would spin? If its the delay I'm having the same prob, and really must find out why.

I turned the key to the start pos. no noise no crank nothing. I then tried again...nothing except I just held the key in the start pos and after a few seconds it cranked and started. I just was trying to move the car so my son could replace the timing belt and check those bolts in the steering column (they were tight) so back to the drawing board!

A broken timing belt wouldn't cause a no crank situation. How did he check the bolts, just try and wiggle the ignition? You have to remove the upper and lower steering column covers and that requires removal of the lower dash cover, so it isn't exactly a quick and easy job to check.

LOL, I know a broken timing belt wont cause the cond. He was planning on replacing it anyway, but had to wait untill the belt that was special ordered came in.

Ya it's like a sticking relay or something, If I ever get a chance to check it out when its doing it, I might be able to find out why.

I had the same symptoms. The dealership told me it was the battery cables. Ordered new cables and +ve terminal connector. No change. not wanting to spend anymore money, I just lived with the problem.

Then I saw this thread and noticed Aredubjay's post where he mentioned that if he turned the headlights off, it sometimes helped the startup. A little lightbulb went off in my head (and then quickly burned out ). I drive with the headlights on too, so I figured I would try some experiments. As I turned off each accessory (fan, radio, radar detector, headlights, etc) it started easier. This led me to believe that the problem was with the wiring that just new battery cables coudn't help.

After some searching, I found this post. It describes a wiring upgrade that is easy to do. I went to Home depot and spent about $8 on wire and connectors. Only needed a good wire cutter, vice grips, 10mm socket and 14mm socket. Spent less than a hour installing them. It's been two days now and the car has started everytime on the first try. Hasn't done that in months. There's probably an underlying problem I'm not dealing with, but this works so I can live with it.

So if you have the starting problem and it gets better if you turn off the accessories, you might want to try the wiring upgrade. It's easy and it fixed my problem.

Cheers,
Matt
