Faq?

Guys,
I have been looking into making a central FAQ for the SVX. I have seen a decent amount of FAQ materials on other sites. What is the policy on quoteing the FAQ from other sites? I assume I have to e-mail the person. Can I make a direct link? Or do I rewrite them?

Terry McClaine implicitly asks that no one copy the material from his site (the one linked to Yahoo), however, he allows linking to it.

Also, in my "thoughts" (haven't put actions to it) about doing a new FAQ, I was going to avoid personal conjecture such as found on Terry's site (eddy doesn't like the reference trashing techs).

I also wanted to link to some of the trouble charts I've scanned from the manual. I've scanned the "Engine Noise" trouble shooting chart and the "General Engine" troubleshooting chart. They are in my Yahoo "briefcase." You're welcome to download them if you wish, as well as anything else in my locker. I can't remember what all I've scanned. I have strut installation instructions, somewhere. Also the schematic of the combination meter, location of the security system components on the '92 and a few other things (damn! I need to catalogue these things and put them on CD). Anything I have by way of images is anyone's to have.

Terry McClaine does have a decent amount of stuff under him. That would make a nice link. I am starting out with simple ones. I will PM you the link for that. Tell me what to add or you can modify that as well -- sounds good?

I agree we should start a new one. Most of the information available is quite useful, however not complete. I know many people here have much more VAST knowledge about these cars than I, but I would be willing to help anyway that I can.

Let me know what the plans are.

Ryan, I am working on it. I will PM you a link. check it and see if there are things we need to add. The more we add stuff to it, the better the FAQ can get (I assume).

Don't rush to print Lwin. Measure twice, cut once.

By it's nature an FAQ section is organic, it will or should grow as the questions arrive and are dealt with.

Rather than compiling and cutting and pasting lots of material, why not design how the FAQ section might look, how it will navigate, what will be the architecture?

That way, when you have the pilot up, any additional material needs to be added, [there will be lots!] will not look like an afterthought. Get all the material from Terry McLaine, Aredubjay, Eddycat and James the Master Tech before you start, you will then know the likely size and how to organise it.

That is a good idea. I have tossed out a couple of things together. But I need some form of organization. I will need to look into it.
Thanks

Red hot subject

Lwin

Another suggestion for your FAQ section.

Here in Ireland in some Chinese restaurants, certain spicy dishes are graded for "hotness". The hottest and spiciest would have a graphic of 5 red hot chilli peppers beside it on the menu, with lower scores for less spicy dishes. The idea is you don't order something too spicy, then send it back to the kitchen because you can't eat it.

I propose you use this grading system for certain questions in the light of the recent flameout. Any questions or answers relating to passive 4WS gets 5 chilli peppers, and any relating to active 4WS, for a long time mythical in the US, must rate at least 4 peppers!!

I know what you are talking about but I suggest that we drop all topics on 4WS. That is an extremely volatile subject and I don't think we should have that for a while...

But the hotness is a nice idea.

Peppered up

OK Lwin

It wasn't a totally serious suggestion, I was just hoping some of the protagonists would read it and cop themselves on!!

You might want to edit your avatar, unless you have caught the pun bug from Don and Randy and Joe. You have ACYLONE, when you possibly meant ALCYONE[ pronounced al-see-oh-neh].

Alcyone I think is the Italian for Halcyon, which is originally Greek for pinnacle or best. Perhaps some member with Italian connetions {Larry 111??} could confirm this? If you stick in another C there in your version, you would have ACYCLONE, which it looks as if your car is running away from.

Less FAQ

Lwin

Any progress with the FAQ section?

I have another suggestion for you. This section should contain a list of any part numbers people have bought when servicing their cars or fixing a problem.

A clever way to set it up would be to give user priveliges to members so they can input the numbers as they get them. This would require less modifying and updating by admin. We would have to go on trust that our people would not flute around and input wrong information on purpose. What do you think?

That is a good idea. The better thing is that I am switching my system over to linux today. I can't live with Microcrap anymore. By then, I should have a stable server for stuff.

The FAQir of Oman

Another suggestion Lwin.

Most would agree that each question listed on the FAQ be listed with the definitive answers, that is to say, the advice is generic and as correct as possible, possibly along the lines of factory fact sheets and so on.

But, as you know, not all members tend to agree on all topics, and some are more contentious than others {Aredubjay, did you pay Joe Spitz in Seattle for the piece he includes about Passive Rear Wheel Steering?}

So, I would suggest you include also an "Alternative View" section, which would give personal and non objective views on how to tackle certain modifications and fixes. These should be linked from the relevant section in the FAQ using "Alternative View" buttons embedded in the information. An easy example here would be tranny coolers, some use B&M, some use Mocal and so on, with reasons given for choosing one over the other, and the fitment method.

What do the panel think??

Joe
