Service Required

hi all,
have moved to melbourne. went for 170,000k service was told I had leaks from
1) timing case seal
2) rocker cover gasket
3) auto trans sump
4) extensive housing seal
5) trans cooler lines to radiator.
I am shell shocked, as i don't see anything on my driveway.
so need to get 2nd opinion. any suggestions as to whom might know what they are talking about and h ow bad these are ?

Re: Service Required

Hello and welcome.

Unfortunately, the mechanic may be right. These sexy, modern looking cars are now 20 years old and things start to either leak, rattle, crunch or go bang.

I recommend that you search through these forums and ask some more questions before you spend any money though!

I am in NSW, but there are members in Melbourne that may be able to help.

Mike

Mine has 136,000 kms on the clock & has only ever dripped oil from between engine & gearbox seal - mechanic said it was not worth touching since it was only about 2 drips per month!!

Hi, I do not know if they have regulations regarding leaks in Australia, but if not personally, I would just watch the levels and change the gaskets as other work needed to be done.
1) Timing case seal, at 170K get ready to change the timing belt (recommended every 100K and the oil will reduce the life of it), do the full job: cam seals, water pump, idlers, tensioner, belt, timing belt cover seals.
2) Rocker cover seal, just a mess when it gets worse, not required until it bothers you
3) Auto trans sump, change the gasket next time the transmission fluid and filter needs a change.
4) extensive (extension?) housing seal, same as #2
5) Trans cooler lines to radiator, this is the one that I would track down first since (personally I destroyed a transmission in my truck this way) if it is a rubber section getting weak and weeping that section should be replaced before it breaks, but if it is just a fitting may be solved by tightening it up.
