Purchasing an A/C compressor for a '92 with R134a

It appears as though my A/C compressor has a leak in the rear of the case that is not easily repairable. This system was converted back in '05 to R134a and this leak has been a source of consternation for some time . This was a reman unit set up for R134a and was not cheap if I recall correctly. It's time to replace it again, unfortunately.

So, I'm trying to decide on purchasing a reman vs new unit at this time. I'm leaning toward a new unit unless I'm convinced otherwise! Having been burned once is making me gun shy on another reman unit.

Question I have is that should I purchase a compressor for a newer SVX, like say a '97? I assume that the fittings are the same between all the years? Can someone verify this for me pls? On the same token, are our compressors used in any other Subaru models? My local u pull it yard tons and tons of subarus so I thought I'd ask!

Thanks.

The compressor is not the same as any other Subaru. If I were you, i'd get a 92 Compressor. Then you know for sure the connections will match up. There is no reason that the 92 compressor wont work with 134. I have owned several retrofitted 134 92s and they worked just fine.

Unfortunately, there is no listing for a '92 or '93 compressor on the subaru sites. Secondly, the '92/'93 compressors are for R12 which, presumably, comes with Esther oil and not PAG oil needed for R134a. Does this sound legit?

Yes. The only differences would be the oil and probably O-rings. I would buy a 94 up compressor, but at the same time I would replace my dryer. If it was not replaced during the conversion---it should have been. Dryer is not an expensive part.

Copy that. A new drier has been purchased and on stand by for when the compressor goes in.

Can I assume that all A/C compressors for the SVX is physically identical - mounting hardware, piping, etc.? If so, I'll go ahead and bite the bullet and order a new unit from one of the online dealers.

thanks.

Re: Purchasing an A/C compressor for a '92 with R134a

They are the same at least for 94-97. The original part number for 94 was 73011PA010, but now it shows up as 73011PA011 for all years 94-97.

It's really expensive at about $500 for the assembly depending on where you get it. 1stSubaruParts shows it as $476, but then they want $47.60 shipping which it too much. SubaruParts shows it at $503 but their shipping is less. You can try Liberty Subaru or call Jackie at Annapolis Subaru.

Re: Purchasing an A/C compressor for a '92 with R134a

I need to call around a bit. I think I'm going to get bent over on this one

I am curious, what year did the switch from R12 to R134a take place in the SVX?

Thanks for the info.
