Have you checked the level of the fluid? The power steering does NOT use power steering fluid. It uses Transmission Fluid. The same kind that you use in the transmission unless you are using synthetic fluid. Hope this helps.

Actually dectron 11 or 111 ATF . I replaced the O ring , I flushed mine by removing the return hose ( the one to the left of the pump that is held with a hose clamp ) starting up the engine with a hose atached to it into a bucket. While my friend poured in the new fluid into the RES. I turned the steering wheel , we passed 2 Quarts thu it. Then we replaced the steering belt and tightened it so it would not twist using your hand , before I did this mine would not turn the wheels standing still. now I do it with one finger.

All Subarus (with the occasional odd-ball exception like the XT6) use Dexron III transmission fluid for the power steering fluid. For those who didn't know that, I suggest picking up an owners manual.
Your pump probably ran out of fluid. This is bad. If you are lucky, you can fix the leak, add new fluid, and you'll be fine. However, it's possible that your pump was ruined by running dry. That's big bucks. Make sure all the power steering lines going into and out of the pump are tight. I ran out of fluid once when a line came loose and sprayed fluid everywhere. There is also a little o-ring inbetween the pump and reservoir that rots away and causes leaking. Dave Last edited by red95svx; 07-19-2005 at 10:06 AM. |

Go to" How to Doc " at the top right corner of this page. I was quoted $98.00 for a rebuilt pump at Auto Zone

That sounds very suspicious. My guess is they looked up an XT instead of an SVX. At any rate, I tried a reman power steering pump from a national aftermarket parts chain and it was DOA. Buy at your own risk. Dave |

Recently, I checked with the power steering main pressure line. It already cost almost one hundred dollar for one...
