We use SVX style filters on the Justy

They are also slightly larger than the OEM Justy filters.

Synth and K&N in mine. I put maybe 100 miles on her a month so the cost is negligible.

None of these are Purolator or Wix. Two are Korean and one is Middle East!

Some manufacturers decide to consolidate filter #s and just use the flat flange filter(SVX style) to cover both application. No other differences (inside or outside) at all!

First of all Subaru oil filters are made in the US with the exception of the turbo filters which are made in Japan.

Secondly, as far as Subaru filters are concerned the difference in filter numbers is due to the square inches of filter material inside. The SVX filter (also used on the 3.0) has much more material in it than the 4 cyilinder filter does. This helps to clean the 2 extra quarts that the 6 cylinders use. Aftermarket companies got lazy and listed the Legacy filter as the SVX filter. It will work, but you're missing out on a lot of extra filtering material! Subaru released a memo explaining this a while ago. I'll see if I can find it.

From Subaru Tech Tips March/April 2002 regarding the differences between oil filter numbers 15208AA060 (4 cyl non turbo) and SOA5165109 (6 cylinder cars):

"Both filters have the same physical dimensions as far as threads, "O" ring, and bypass valve opening pressure (23 p.s.i.). However, the H-4 filter has 141 square inches of filtration surface and the H-6 filter has 201 square inches of filtration surface."

Since they will both fit on either engine, aftermarket companies love to list the same filter for both cars. But since their filter is modeled after Subaru's 4 cylinder filter (15208AA060), you miss out on 60 square inches of filtration surface! Does this sound like a bargain to you??

I recently did an oil change for someone with a JDM SVX. The aftermarket filter I used (Delphi fxo166) was at least 30% bigger than the JDM filter I removed. Presumably this means it has more filtration surface. The supplier lists a different part number for the legacy filter.

Purolator L30165 oil filter from the 1983-1995 Porsche 944. Its 66% bigger than the L14459 our cars call for, has the anti-drain and bypass valves and more surface area for better cooling. (that's a quote from the original poster)

Classic SVX
I bought one today at the local Advance Auto.
On the box it states that it traps 96% of the dirt and grime in oil with multi-pass efficiency. I wonder what the micron rating of it is?

The purolator looks well built. I've used fram filters until I read about the poor quality and because I liked the black grip stuff on the end. It made it easier to get them off. Now that I think about it, the black stuff probably retarded heat dissipation as well.

I'm about to change my oil for the first time since getting the car. I tend to use 10w-30 in the summer, and 5w-30 in the winter, due to temperature differences. The 10w-30 is thicker, but in the summer it's much warmer, and i've had better experience that way. I typically use Quakerstate Full synthetic, in the clear bottle, for my cars. My car also has zero oil leak/burn, the oil pan is clean, as well as all surrounding areas, no crud on the under-side, so i should be able to get away with it. Over-all i'm impressed with the quality and condition of my engine, and how it holds it's fluids.

I use the same plan for mine, although I go with Mobil 1.
Plenty of opinions on oil out there

Concerning the filter, I've noticed that in recent years - from about 05 and up - Subaru filters have been getting noticeably smaller. The filter for the WRX (which is the same as the Baja and Forester) is tiny compared to the OEM SVX and Legacy filters from the mid 90s. I wonder what the thinking is behind that? I would assume that bigger is better.

It's the same thinking that shrank a pound bag of coffee to 11.5 ounces: Smaller = cheaper to make.
