WRX bearings...??
Okay, I realize this is probably redundant, but I'm too lazy to search through eons of posts.
Is there truly a recent WRX wheel bearing which will work as a replacement for the SVX? If so, what's the part number? And does anyone have experience with this? I'm about at my wit's end on my wheel bearings..........

The STI rear bearing is the same as the SVX rear bearing. The seals are also the same. The fronts bearings are not the same though.

No. Subaru parts are sold by part number, not by application. Dave |

If that was the case, why not change the air filter number? Or the PCV valve, or knock sensors, or temp sensor, or bearing seals.... Dave |

Bearings
In case you don't know Federal Mogul and Timkin both make bearings to fit the SVX, but don't use their seals.

Do you have a link for a website for either of these aftermarket sources?

Bearing Woes...
are a pain in the arse. Getting ready to replace my third set in 2 yrs. First two sets were improperly installed. I was able to locate and purchase a set of Federal Mogul bearings on ebay for a decent price. Would not have stepped up and paid as much as I did but I was under the impression they were OEM bearings. Still less than half of what they retail for including shipping. Be smarter than me and make sure you know what you're buying. I recall a post from someone in the auto parts field warning about Timken's being unreliable. Good luck.

Timken
I disagree that Timkin bearings are unreliable. They are as good or better than OEM or Federal Mogul. As to a site for finding the bearings just type "Timken" in search here and you will find threads that have discussed sources which include some of the major auto chains such as AutoZone.

Subaru's current bearings are stamped "NTN". Not sure if the SVX bearings have the same stamp. Dave |

John Luciano...
states, "OOPS I work for Timken . They just bought out our Company last year. Bearings are bad i will have to check on that even for free i would not want to risk a problem."
I took lhopp77's advice and used the search tool to use the keyword "timken"... This is the quote I was referring to when I said I "recalled" someone saying Timkens are not good. Interestingly lhopp77 talks about Timkens being good through the first part of the thread, but with no validating evidence. So I remembered John's comment because it was the opinion up to that point based on what I consider the most valid and extensive experience with Timken bearings. There was a post from one person with a set installed and no problems yet, but Luciano's confirmation of info I'd recieved from several professional mechanics and the race shop where I'm now having my work done did it for me. The same thread mentions a price of just over $50 apiece for the Timkens, which really appeals to my inner accountant, but after replacing the bearings in my car three times in two years I'm leary about taking a chance of having to do it again next year...and I got the BCA Federal Moguls for the same price as the timkens on ebay. I don't understand lhopp77. Why are you so vested in Timkens? caveat emptor-buyer beware. WGJ Last edited by WGJ; 07-01-2005 at 11:04 PM. |
