Got a ride in an '04 STI today...

Amy in my department had her '04 Nissan Altima in the shop for warranty work, and got to drive her brother-in-law's WRC Blue '04 STI for the day! Needless to say, knowing that I'm a HUGE Subaru freak, she had to give me a ride (couldn't let me drive it as it wasn't hers... )

Amy used to own an '02 WRX 5MT, so she didn't give me the grandma ride, did a few hard launches, ran it up to 60mph, braked hard for turns and spun all four tires a few times.

I've been grinning ear-to-ear for the last 4 hours and called AmazonParrot and Svxfiles as soon as I got home! The feel and handling really impressed me, but I still feel like the STI is too extreme for me as a daily driver. Think an '05 Legacy 2.5GT or '06 MazdaSpeed 6 would suit my tastes much better...

What a ride though!

I've been there man....oh what an experience.

At my job we worked on a 04 STi for a fiberglass job. Anyway - when we finished - I got to drive it to the detail shop for a nice cleaning. Oh My God. What an experience ..........It was like - "woah, 60mph already...dam"

I was so souped when I got it back to the shop. I wanted one - still do. The STi is the fastest car I've ever been behind the wheel. A close second would be my friends 00 Mustang GT with some mods.

But wow - what an experience.

The current turbo Legacys are fantastic cars, as I've said many times here. A friend of mine has one and I've driven it a couple of times. Wonderful car.

Chike,
You do realize that your SVX will know immediately that you've been cheating on her (she'll smell the STI on you)
-Bill
p.s. took the wife and kids into D.C. for the Chinese New Year parade and saw what looked to be a brand new Legacy STI parked on the street. It didn't have the big hood scoop or trunk lid spoiler, so I did a double take when I saw the STI badge....

Chike,

Man that is awesome. I've not rode in an STi but my buddy just picked up a 02 WRX and took me for a drive. And yeah, those cars really have some get up and go. Lots of fun. I didn't get to drive it, as I had been drinking. But still a great experience.

Yeah, I've been reading up on those '05 Legacy 2.5 GT's and they're some pretty sweet looking cars. I'm seriously thinking about one now, especially after reading some Subaru literature that said they strengthened the 5MT used in the car (per article, same strengthened 5MT is used in the Forester XT and Baja turbo).

I've also been reading some threads over on the www.legacygt.com/ forums, and two bone-stock '05 turbo GT's ran 13.9 in the 1/4 mile. Not bad for a 250hp, 3400lb car! There also seem to be no real issues with these 5MT trannys breaking even after harsh track use. Plus, I'm seeing a few low mileage GT's going for 23,9K on cars.com & autotrader...

I could definitely see one of those in my driveway next to the SVX!

Serious power can definitely come out of those 2.0 liter engines. Lots of get-up-n-go can be had in almost any gear!

Honestly, the '04 STI felt faster than my friend's '03 EVO when it was bone stock. However, his evo wasn't stock for long, and the ride I had after some mild bolt-on mods (ecu, boost controller, intake, down-pipe and exhuast) is still the wildest I've had to date!

That would be my mom. My dads brother lives with us too....he and my mom both pay for the C32. My uncle takes the train to work in NYC every morning so the car never really gets driven a whole lot. Its only got 3 k on the clock and its a 36 k lease. But i drive it once a week....and i thrash the **** out of it.

te legacy gt is a great car,, i would go with the , stil uses the 2.5 block and heads, just diffrent turbo set up

also the sti you are paying alot of money for the bling appeal.. really a lot of the stuff your geting doesnt do anything with going faster,, HID headlights,, DCCD..water sprayer,,brembo brakes etc etc

now the only thing i would really like is the 6 speed its much much stronger then the 5 speeds, and the brembo brakes

as for the evo, most you guys know im a dsm fan, and still to this day the 4g63 is a awsome power plant,

so all in all i think the legacy gt is a great buy. and is a top choice,

Chike,

Definitely drive one before you buy one. I drove one last fall. They have a wonderful motor, and the tranny feels pretty good, but the handling was surprisingly poor. Tons of lean in the corners, and not confidence inspiring. I guess some good springs and maybe some slightly better dampers could fix that.

Have you driven an EVO 8 yet? Its AWD, turbo, and has 4 doors. :-)

I may be losing the SVX soon... you know, because its getting to the point where I just dont want to spend all this money on keeping it up... I figure in the next 6 months it will be gone, but being the Subaru fan I am, I imagine a STi will be in its place.
