Removing the crash bar from the doors

Anybody know how to go about this without destorying the door?

Oh yeah I need to figure out a way to drop the windows without any switches as well. Would like to be able to pass them on to someone who can use them so I don't wanna just cut the pw cable

remove everything from the door, and take the bar out
but I advise you not to...

Ben,
Funny that you ask this, as I've been thinking about it myself (not for an SVX that would ever see street use, mind you ). How about a heavy canvas strap attached to the bottom of the window that goes over a roller and snaps (or buckles) on the inner door panel?

Why not? Car is not gonna go on the street. It will eventally be replaced with a full cage so saftey will be better than new. I'm just trying to figure out how to get the welds out without damaging the door.

Do you think it'll have issues with door sag then? Is that why you had concerns?

Bill it looks to have some spot welds holding it to the door. Have trouble seeing as I gotta figure out how to get the windows out w/o a switch.

Ben,
Can you send me some digital pics? I'm thinking maybe you could keep part of the bar to act as the pivot for a strap to control the window.
How about taking a plasma cutter to everything around the crash bar first?

If you are thinking about lightweighing the car, try to manufacture fiberglass doors instead. all rally cars have fiberglass trunks, hoods, doors.... don't damage your original parts... that's what I advise people to do, and that's what I am doing to my hood...

Not everyone has the time or patience to make fiberglass trunks, hoods, and doors. Its probably alot more expensive than just removing what ben wanted too anyway.

Can't do that. Its against the rules and regs of what we will be running in. Hood yes but not the doors (which each far outweigh both the trunk and hood weight together). Hence the question is still out there. How do I remove 'em without damaging the door?

benebob,

How about if you removed the door skin, giving very good access to the bar/beam. Once it's removed, replace the steel door with sheet aluminum, using the bare door frame as a template. It's a simple single curve down to where its covered by the plastic body cladding.
I have not done this myself, but if I make my "other" 92 claret into a drag carn I will certainly try. Aluminum dents very easily, but weighs next to nothing. Tom

ps; would aluminum be legal in your class?
