I think the motor was, but not the entire car.

The production numbers were too high (relatively speaking) to be hand built. I could be wrong with that assumption, though.

Take the NSX and the Viper and their $80k+ pricetag as an idea of what handbuilding a vehicle can do to its final cost. hehe

There's always 25% coupons to help with the handbuilding cost.

Out of curiousity, I started a thread on this up in General Babble (look it up for all kinds of good discussion).

Here's the best post that sums it up so far, from a very knowledgeable source too:

"There was a lot of hand-assembly. The bodies were mostly welded together by robot, but final fitment and inspection was by hand and very thorough.

As has been said already, the rear quarters were hand-brazed and hand-polished from two pieces.

As I understand it (and I have no evidence to back this up - just hearsay) the SVX was built, one at a time, by a single team of people who took each car form start to finish along a short line."

If that was the case then...damn!

That's pretty amazing... Even more so than a limited production vehicle, as they moved them pretty fast for being mostly handbuilt.

Now I know why the car feels more German in construction than most other Japanese cars I've owned/driven.
