Clicking Away to 300

I was just noticing, once again, how quickly membership is growing. Just a short stretch from 300 now, and, we're not even a year old (March 15, is our "official" birthday).

Keep on spreading the word! And, thanks everyone for making this a fantastic site. Without y'all, we'd just be another "club."

And from the number of posts you've made, without you, we'd be only 7/8's of a club.

I remember running across a thread talking about having a club w/a fee and mailings and all that, and the argument against it was that why would someone pay to be in a club when they can get all the same info and comradery for free here.

I'd think that there'd be quite a few people that wouldn't mind going that route because they don't have access to the internet!

Randy,

After conducting an exhaustive investigation; I found that since you stopped posting on the Yahoo SVX site, the message 40 gremlin disappeared. I think that it had to do with the number of messages that you posted daily and the fact that the message 40 gremlin had a crush on your computer.

See you at Snowshoe 2 or are 2 snowshoes called a pair of Muckluks ?

Kev,
We had an entire discussion thread on this subject. I wanted to keep it alive, but, it seemed to have died . . . again. On the Yahoo site, I was pretty much against a "formalized" organization, but, that was because Yahoo was providing all the "stuff" to keep things going (along with overload, message 40 and all that stuff). This site, so far, has been created out of the generosity of a select few. Chris has graciously donated the server -- a few members put up the cash for the software -- Chris's friends have donated the bandwidth -- when the need arises, and equipment fails, there is usually a call for donations, and members have been more than willing to rise to the occasion with donations of needed funding. This is, indeed, a dedicated bunch of folks who are willing to give of themselves to keep "The Network" alive.

Meanwhile, the only reason I wanted to see things "formalized" a bit more, was, to allow the "Network" to become self-sufficient and to take the burden of expense off of Chris, and the need to have to ask for funds when repairs and needs for the net were necessary (when the power supply for the server went down, Chris had to borrow from roomates, then, ask the membership for funds in order to pay them back). My hope is, that this will still come to fruition and that, yes, there will be printed newsletters and the like, but then, there's the whole "crawling/walking" thing.

Just to make things clear, there would be no "membership fee" to be able to be a part of this forum. The fee would only be for those who want to support the Network and it's purpose to further the cause of SVXdom.

I did a search on the threads pertaining to this subject. It came up with these:

Feel free to browse them and add your comments.

Happy I could help, Larry. Killing two birds with one stone: The message 40 gremlin and 1 Smarta$$ -- what a score!

Randy,

Ok, maybe I read those threads too quickly.

I was under the impression that someone was trying to organize an offline club to keep those who don't have access to this site (or even compter at all) updated on important info (i.e. 10th anniv next year...etc.)

I will definitely help in any way I can to keep this server running, I mean if it wasn't going then what the hell would I do at work all day?

Obviously, the full "Network" would also serve those without computers (once we found a way to "reel in" those members). A "paper" newsletter was planned as part of the deal. Printing/postage, of course, is expensive -- which may have helped to quench the thread. Perhaps the option to receive electronic, as opposed to paper would help cut costs. The "Network" membership would, indeed, be all-inclusive, even though a portion of the fee would go to maintianing this site.

Randy,

of course if a paper newsletter was sent out, you'd run into the problem of how often to send (monthly?/quarterly?) and what to put in it for each mailing. Since some of the smaller "meets" seem to come up at the spur of the moment.

As for money, we could raise some money for it, by getting companies (kinetic concepts/JCSports/SVXparts.com/etc.etc) that have parts, to advertise, that in turn could result in more/better parts to be developed once companies see that there is interest and a market for making these items!

We had toyed with a quarterly, to start out with. Although it's a good idea to get "sponsorships" I would not want the publication given over to "crass commercialism." That way, we wouldn't be able to "slam" them if they didn't do right by us.
