ABS Light weirdness

My ABS light came on today, so I restarted the car, and about 30 seconds later it came back on... I did this for a few tims with the same results. I went to a gravel parking lot to test and see if the ABS was in fact non-functional, and it wasnt working. Then while driving, I turned the car off, and back on (at about 50mph in neutral) i slammed on the brakes right after I restarted the car, and no ABS light has come on since. Any ideas what could have happened?

My ABS light came on the other day after a very hard drive in very hard rain. When I parked in the garage, I heard the ABS pump(?) still running. I disconnected the battery and reconnected it and the problem seems to have gone away. I wonder if these occurrences are in any way related/similar. If it happens again, check to see if the pump stays running after the car is shut off.

CJ, what you're describing is a malfunctioning ABS relay. Rather than disconnecting the battery, tapping on the plastic cover that says 'ABS' on it will also shut the pump off. The relay is getting stuck in the open position. It's an inexpensive part, and the only thing to look forward to if you don't replace it is a dead battery someday when you don't notice the buzzing noise.

good reply Mr.Pockets. I had the same trouble and a few knocks on the pump stopped everything.

Knocking the pump did nothing at the time. I haven't noticed the symptom since then and have no idea what caused it. I don't even know whether it was a transient thing or a sign of impending failure. I could have just pulled the fuse, but I wanted it to stop running while I found that fuse.

I will be keeping an eye on it.
