transmission
I just checked for previous and current codes on the tcu and got a steady blinking power light for both. Im assuming there are no issues? My svx is at 149,000. I have no clue if any work has been done to the tranny. There is a clunking noise when I let off the throttle sometimes(usually if I am using 1st or 2nd gears manually) and sometimes when going in reverse, but not when changing gears or anything. It shifts well, no grinding, no problems overall. just curious about that noise? Is it a tranny mount? What kinda issues could arrise from this? what are some good indications on atf change? No clue when the last change was or if it has even been changed? The fluid currently looks milky reddish brown colored? any suggestions?

Re: transmission
The clunking noise (among other things) could just be the rear differential mounts. Easy to check with a flashlight under the back of the car. Seems like a pretty common issue due to the age of the cars.

If you don't know when the ATF was changed then its a good time to change it. If the ATF is milky or brown its WAY past time to change it. To change it just safely jack up the car, use jackstands, take a 17mm wrench and undo the transmission drain plug draining the ATF into a container. You should get about one gallon of ATF in about 1/2 hour. Replace it, and drive the car. Do it again after at least 20 miles. ATF is MUCH cheaper than a transmission!

Re: transmission
When choosing a brand for atf, what are some good options? Is dexron III in any brand ok? Not really trying to be cheap but im not trying to throw away a few hundred bucks either. I was also thinking of sticking a tranny temp gauge in as well. Is this difficult at all? Oh and my SVX is a '94 and only FWD so could this possibly narrow the clunking down to a tranny mount?

Re: transmission
I really like BG Products full synthetic ATF.
I sell it here for $6.00 a quart. LAN really likes the Subaru ATF for about the same price.
