started reinstalling the trans today but ran into a problem
After installing the new torque converter into LAN's trans and attaching it all to the car (4 bell housing bolts and 4 torque converter to plate bolts) I can only rotate the shaft about 1/8 a turn before it rubs on something/binds. If I push threw it clunks/pops and moves another 1/8 turn...What did I do wrong? I am pulling it off tomorrow to see if there is something not lined up right but I dont know how there could be.
Ideas? Need more info? Help Thanks Greg |

You've already bolted it up? I know it can't be this simple, but when you rotate the shaft, are you rotating the engine too?
lol, I suppose we should eliminate the GLARINGLY obvious first. -Patrick

Are you sure the TC was COMPLETELY seated into the oil pump? Do you have the TC bolted to the flexplate yet? All 4 or just some? Are they tight? Do you have the bellhousing pulled tight against the engine?

I was rotating the engine.
I believe the TC is completely seated. (is there a way to verify?) And all 4 bolts are tight on it. Yes, it is slamed right up to the engine. Greg Last edited by nexus_7; 10-14-2007 at 11:03 AM. |

Did you drop a bolt or something down the bellhousing? Did you bolt the engine to the trans and THEN bolt the T/C to the flexplate?

No, nothing fell down, and yes, attached the bell housing then the TC to flexplate.

I believe that Dave is correct about the torque converter.
When you install the TQ it has to be hand turned, and it goes into place in three steps. When it is fully seated the mounting tabs are sunken into the bell housing. From directly overhead you should see only about 1/2 of the mounting tabs. Some times it takes a long time before it gets fully seated.

If you loosen the four engine to trans bolts and it turns more easily, then it could be the TQ.

Issue:
After taking the trans back off we found the C clip that held the torque converters extension came loose and they separated. Went out and bought a really skinny pliers to reach in and pull it out. I had to reuse the old c clip and then decided to use the old extension as well. We then reinstalled the trans and everything now seems to be working. The New one would just disengage if moved even slightly. Greg |
