Saturday and Sunday SVX worked (started) fine!

This Monday morning trying to go to work.. . DeAd! TOOK BATTERY OUT.. Got reading of 1060 (ohm?) on meter continuity position.. . Dint have time to pull fuses as recommended (?).. .

GOT MAD.. Went to PepBoys.. Kinda demanded new Optima Red Top battery ($198 price now!).. GOT NEW ONE!

I'll let ya Know! .. .

Re: "DeAd" battery.. intermittent.. ???

Just took SVX to self spray car wash.. to help remove (diagnose) oil/ATF leak on engine .. . WUNT START! HA!

Moved some + wires around looking for short ??? .. . Then, tried again.. It STARTED! ???

Does the start ignition system have a RELAY IN THE DASH as part of the starting system (beside the solenoid) .. I cud here a clicking.. but nothing else would happen. Sounded like it came from the dash.. not the solenoid .. ??

Thanks, Jim

Re: "DeAd" battery.. intermittent.. ???

My 1995 SVX AWD L has no OEM security .. Therefore, it doesn't have a security inhibitor relay.. RIGHT? Also, why wud this relay click.. if it is normaly closed (connected for start circuit, right?).. ??

If I dont have this relay.. WHAT is the click I hear (inside dash, it seems?) when I try to start.. and it doesn't turn over (doesn't sound like solenoid.. sounds like in dash .. right behind ignition key in general.. ??)

Thanks, Jim

Jim,have a look here at this thread. This is the same problem that you are having.

Re: "DeAd" battery.. intermittent.. ???

I would like to do the starter relay (low amperage) MOD, but I use my Cruise Control a lot. Is there a way to do the MOD now.. where CC wud not be an issue (not sure exactly how it interferes, but can't remember my name half the time.. let alone, to turn off CC before shifting!!).. ??

Thanks, Jim

Jim the Cruise Control's 'turn-off relay' is grounded, to turn the Cruise off, when you select N or P.
As long as you use the recomended 30 amp relay, the small current that the Cruise uses, won't turn the 30 amp relay on to cause the starter to work.
It does work very well, and saves the other contacts and wiring.

Harvey.

Re: "DeAd" battery.. intermittent.. ???

SOOOooooooo... .. .

1) The Cruise will not malfunction at all if this 30 amp Relay MOD is done, right? Do I have to get a certain 30 amp relay.. ?? Just 4 pole 30 AMP.. RIGHT?? I think your CEL (dont know wat dat means? Ha!) comment is speculation.. right? I dont hear of any Cruise interference (shared here) .. JUST A COUPLE 5-SPEEDS! Right?

2) Why wud my start attempts yield clicks yesterday .. but no starter engagement? (after wetting engine at U-Serve spray car wash) .. if I dont even have a start inhibitor relay? Musta bin solenoid.. RIGHT?

3) Please tell whatshisface that this Starter 30 AMP Relay MOD is not a bandaid! It is a better circuitry design! It wud only be a bandaid if the OEM circuit had SUBSTANTIALLY DEGRADED THE CONTACTS SEVERELY OF ONE OF THE INVOLVED "RELAYS" FIRST! If the OEM circuit (ign sw, inh relay, AT inh) were in at all decent condition, this wud have to be BETTER THAN OEM!

4) If the Relay trip side is 0.1 amps only [(a)How does taking the 30amp wire from start ign sw to Solenoid .. placing thru Relay at pole 85 .. turn 30 amps to 0.1 amps?] .. then (b) Don't we just need a small wire (16, 18 Ga) for 86 relay pole to ground?

Thanks, JIm

P.S. What is CEL? Hmmm? Please explain in simple terms.. (Idontgetit)

Right.
Yes 30 amp relay, that has a winding current of about 0.10amps, is OK, the Bosch is ideal
This was worked out a long time ago, it was someone that used a smaller relay that found the problem, I worked out how to fix it.

Having a relay on the starter solenoid, was always OEM, all US cars were fitted with one.

When the wire from the ign sw. was connected to the starter, it drew 30amps. Now it is connected to the relay winding, it only draws 0.10amps. The wire from the starter battery terminal, to the relay, then to the solenoid, now carries the 30amps.

Look at this, to see how the wires were run.

Re: "DeAd" battery.. intermittent.. ???

Thanks Harvey!

So... I did MOD last nite.. Worked fine. This morning, wunt start .. just kept clicking!!! HA! YIKES! Got out, opened hood, tapped on solenoid (recent starter rebuild installed), took solenoid (start) slide connector OFF, then back ON .. Started right up!!! YIKES!!!???

Stopped on the way to work for business stop.. NOW, dint even click.. just dash lights coming on.. Got late for work, so just turned ign ON.. and JUMPED starter MAIN to SOLENOID tab.. started of course.

I'm about to go out from work.. to go work out (PARK).. then home... Wish me luck!

Thanks, Jim

P.S. Later, I thot maybe AT inh sw connection in PARK is inconsistent??? OR, possibly solenoid wire coming from ign sw might be defective .. seemed very brittle, to try to bend, when working with it during MOD install last nite???

Re: "DeAd" battery.. intermittent.. ???

BTW .. I used an Autozone chinese 40amp 4 tab Relay .. with a resistance of 81 ohms across 85-86.

Almost there hey?. A few possibility's.
Check all your new connections first.

The Ign switch or the gearbox inhibitor switch may be a bit etched from the current.
It really has to be traced when it is happening.

When it happens again, try starting it in N, it will be a cleaner switch.

If you can have some body to turn the key, and check for voltage at the Ign sw wire to the relay.

If not there, while holding the key in the start position, move the gear leaver between P, N.

Next holding the key in the starter position, rotate the key around to move the contacts.

If one of them gets results, stop have a beer.

That relay is fine.

Harvey.

Re: "DeAd" battery.. intermittent.. ???

Posted last nite from my cp .. but I guess it dint work for some reason... .

After I drove a little yesterday, it became apparent that every time I stopped.. passed shift lever thru N .. or into P ... the engine died! I guess from starter engaging (although I couldn't feel or hear anything).. YIKES!

I use Cruise Control all the time.. and am too senile to remember to shut off before shifting to or thru N .. or to P ! If there is no fix for this.. for me.. then, I need to go back to OEM circuit.

PLEASE ADVISE!

Thanks, Jim

It worked in the PM.

I really doubt that that is happening Jim.
A lot of people have done this, no problems.

If you used that relay, the cruise won't trigger the starter.
If it did, you would have certainly noticed it. (chain saw noise)
If it did it would not stop the engine, it has a freewheel in the starter gear, that would eventually blow up.

It would have to cut the Ign to stop it. So I would suspect the Ignition switch.

Harvey.

Re: "DeAd" battery.. intermittent.. ???

WELL.. You're probably right about the starter, I thot I would hear it too!
BUT.. The engine stops every time the shifter passes thru or stops at N.. or stops on P !
The ign sw was replaced about 2 years ago.
The AT inh sw was replaced 3 mos ago.
My SVX has no OEM security .. so, must have shunt.

Is there an explanation for the engine stopping in N and P?
Is there a fix? Could it be using a Bosch relay instead of the Chinese 40amp (81ohm 85-86) relay I got at Autozone?

Thanks, Jim
