Thanks for all the input. I read several writeups on seating the TC so I'm pretty sure I got that right, but not 100%. It never made any noise like it was trying to do something, when it was running. I didn't pull the pan and look at the internal filter. I already yanked it this AM. At least I'm getting quicker, I got it out in an hour and a half this time. I'll check it out and see if I can find anything. Of course I may be installing a spare 5 spd in it while I'm checking out the AT. We'll see. I really want to have a good 4eat in this car, but out of the five 4eats I've had in my Subes, not a one was worth a crap.

If it locks up it was not seated. I have seen some wrecking yards pull off the trans pan, and remove the filter, just to make sure you install a new filter. AND, some wrecking yards leave a plastic baggie in the pan with the pan bolts in it! We had someone on the Network have a dented trans pan, that restricted the oil flow into the filter pickup...

Well......................Uh...................mmm m..................Ok I guess I didn't have it in all the way. DTOH!!! I sat there and spun it around for a couple of seconds and gave me one extra clunk that sat it down another 3/8 or 1/2" so that the flexplate side of the bolt tangs are exactly flush with the bellhousing mating surface. Before, the TC side of the tangs were flush. You live and learn I guess.
Now the question is: Do I dare just slap it back in like it is or is there anything I need to carefully inspect first? Stephen |

check the end of the pump drive and make sure it is not broken or ground down. Also might want to check and be sure that the pump isn't messed up. Take a light and look down the input shaft.

Well, the saga continues.......unfortunately. I got it back in and checked it before I attached the CVs and prop shaft, and the stub axles were turning with it in gear. So I assumed all was well. When I got it back down on the ground to drive, it won't move. I guess there is just enough flow to turn the stubs, but the weight of the axle and wheel(not to mention the whole car) is too much? And someone glued the pan on there with RTV so I can't get it off without pretty much destroying it. I'll go with the something crawled up there idea. If I leave my shoes outside for a couple days, I have to check them for slugs. Five years on the other hand, YIKES. MT anyone?

If you have time, take a knife, or single edge razor blade and cut the RTV and you can save the pan.

I may try that, but I just talked to the seller and he said he'll give me full credit toward another tranny or even an engine. So I think I'll put a 5 spd in it and sell it. Then I can buy an EZ30 or maybe an SVX. This Legacy is just totally cherry and should quickly get me at least $1700 as a FWD or $2000 AWD. Thanks for all the help you guys!

wrecking yard
May I ask which wrecking yard your dealing with? I am from gresham, having the information around could be useful. If it is John from laural auto, I already know of him.

It's George in Damascus. He's been real good on this as he's offered me other parts and cash in exchange for the tranny. He's going to give me a 4.44 rear and some WRX calipers and some cash and I found a 98 4.44 tranny to match for pretty cheap. So I should be back up with some 4.44 zip here this weekend.

Wait a minute??? your driving from Beaverton to Damascas for parts and I am driving from Gresham to Banks for parts? I think we need to exchange wrecking yards John at Laural Auto 503-985-7110. John is also very good to work with and will honor all of his stuff. He usually meets me at beaverton subaru where we exchange parts. I got all my 5 speed swap stuff there. Strictly subaru.
Could you get me the number for the damascas place???
