Tire Siping?Anyone tried it?
Has anyone ever had their tires siped? If so did it make any difference? I just put BFG Traction T/A's on last fall and they work ok but on hard packed glazed snow and ice they slide around. I've heard that siping will help.

Every non-studded ice tire I've seen is sipped.
When I was looking to buy my last set of summer tires, the salesperson suggested that I get them sipped for better heat dispersal and better overall traction, maybe it was just because it was a service they did in house?

Most tire places reccomend siping your tires because of the positives. First, they keep the tire cooler and will not wear them as quickly. I have never had a tire warrenty voided because of this process. They also give increased traction especially on ice or hard packed snow. They say that they are as good on ice, or better than studs because they will not skate like the studs. I have used them for years and will always have it done to mine. I think it does make a difference.
 Oh, this process is cutting the tire tread across the tread which makes the tread have more flex and more gripping edges. Some tires come that way, but you can have it done as well.

I've never heard of this until now but my tires came this way from Sears.

I woudent do it if you really push your car. Ive seen many, many siped tires start to chunk off becasue of the reduced strenght in tread block because there cut up. Every 4x4 that aculy did some offroading that had there tires sipped complained of the thread chunking off, ive also seen it on performance tires but its not as common.
I used to work at les swab tires center in seattle, i used to sipe tires daily. Iam just saying what i have experianced. I have no dought that the tires have improved cooling abilities, or that it would help in the rain/snow/ice, but for dry performance or offroading I would not sipe.

It's hard to imagine how compromising the contact surface of a tire could be a good thing. Slightly improved grip for off-road or racing tires that hardly have a tread pattern to begin with, or for all-season street tires on glare ice? Hmm... maybe. Otherwise, it seems foolhardy to try to "improve" on the tread function of a tire. Those engineers at Goodyear and Bridgestone and Michelin seem fairly bright.

Yeah but, 'Extras' that you can do in house and charge up the ying-yang for are always much superior to what the Big Boys with their millions of dollars of testing can come up with!

I used to be an engineer at a major U.S. tire company, and all I will say is if it helped the tire perform better, it would be designed into the tire! My opinion is that siping is pure profit for the tire shop, accelerates tire wear and give less dry and rain grip.
