'97 Rear Vehicle Speed Sensor Q?

Is anyone aware of what changed between the 1992 vehicle speed sensor (MRE) on the transfer case housing (3 wires, about 1' long) and the 1997 MRE (2 wires, about 2.5' long)? Subaru says that their parts diagram doesn't even show one on the '97, but it's definitely there. Is it that the MRE isn't avalable as a stand alone part and that it is integrated into the AT wire harness? Any input at all would be appreciated.

Thanks-
Brad

eight 1992's, one '95 and one '97 plus 2 others that aren't "mine" but seem to have wound up in my pile.
