Even if the cage fits, the bazel will not.

oh and the screens are usually just the right fit that you have to remove the rest and cut the cage in the SVX to fit. I tried with 3 screens so far.

You still have to find places for the buttons and such.

Search through last year's reading pics. I know a few people took pics of my old screen (not done yet but viewable)

liliput 7"
HP mobo (once came with XPe)
removable HDD
1GHz cruso with 256MB -- the lower your RAM, the quicker it'll post and XP needs min 128.
XP pro with XPe components. Hibinate once, boot many.

I also have another machine with EPIA M10000. I think I am going to get rid of the MB.

XP with 128 is dog slow, stick with 256 or more. Most new BIOS can be set to run only a quick test on the memory, meaning you could still POST with 1 or 2 gigs in less than a couple of seconds. The main hinderance in boot speed is the HD's transfer rate. Get 7200 RPM drives if at all possible, but go no lower than 5400 RPM to maintain a spritely response. The biggest problem I see with these setups is heat. The radio cavity gets no circulation what so ever and it can get nice and toasty even in the winter when you have the heat on. With the HD and CPU generating a good amount of heat, I'd look for a way to ventilate the area a little while you're at it.

128 MB is usable. You don't want to go over 256 or 512 in the car PC. Why? hibernation is your great friend. The more RAM you have, the slower it shuts down/start up.

While HD makes a good amount of heat, you can not leave them in the car here where it is cold. In cold climate, HDD will take as much as 20 minutes to unfreeze and spin. You want a USB Hdd or solid state drive like CF drive.

You should be able to put entire OS plus maps and what not on a 4GB CF card and put your music in a seperate USB drive.

Actually, it doesn't take any longer for a 256 or 512 PC to shutdown, unless you've been doing a lot of multitasking and have a lot of data to flush from the pagefile. People with more memory tend to run more apps at once, which is why it also seems longer for their PCs to shutdown. With a specialized car PC, you probably don't need more than 512, but definitely don't go less than 256.

I haven't heard of any drives taking 20 minutes to "unstick", but some systems do have protective circuitry which won't power up a drive until the surrounding environment is within acceptable temperatures. My OmniFi DMP1 with a 20Gig 2.5" hd has this feature, so I don't worry at all about constantly needing to take a drive in and out, not to mention the possibility of dropping it. If a drive does actually get stuck, then 20 minutes will pretty much fry the motor circuits so it never unsticks. Luckily, drives are cheap nowadays. I would imagine that someone has already come up with a temperature activated USB enclosure by now. If not, it wouldn't be too hard to build the switching circuitry from some Radio Shack parts.

Temp regulated HDD enclosure would be nice. I should look into it. I personally put a 3.5 and 2.5 HDD, Microdrive (HDD) and CF drive in a freezer overnight and tried out the boot time. Try it out. Interesting results...
