Newbie questions!

Hey folks,

Just signed on so pardon my ignorance! I have some general questions about my beloved '92SVX (pearl white). Anyway, has anyone ever rebuilt their engines? How about a partial rebuild like top end only? I'm simply curious about taking the heads off and having them flowed to see if there're much room in there for improvements.

On another note, my exhaust seems to be loud by my standard and the sound is coming from the middle of the car. Is this a normal thing with these vehicles? I don't hear anything rattling or vibrating from the center. Guess as I get older I prefer a quiter ride, especially for those long hauls on the weekends.

Thanks for any inputs.

Ali

Ali,
First of all, welcome. Glad you found us.

Secondly, check with svx_commuter (and check his personal locker on the re-build). Also wawazat? has done some engine work, I believe.

No, LOUD exhaust is NOT an SVX standard. In perfect stock form, it is "graveyard" quiet. You must have an issue somewhere. Sounds like someone has taken their liberties with your exhaust.

I'd like to second the welcome! The more you hang out here the more you'll grow to like this bunch

If the exaust sound is coming from the middle of the car you might want to have the exaust checked for leaks. Exaust noise from the middle of a car usually indicates (from my experience) to be leaks around the catalytic converter(s), especially if they bolt onto flanges. That is the first place I would check.

I believe my exaust to be bone stock and it is also very quiet at idle and low throttle. Only when I get on it does it exude a soft throaty growl that builds to an extremely satisfying "howl" (for lack of a better word) as it nears redline. There is definitely not a "burble" from the exaust at idle.

Thanks for the welcome gents.

I'll have to get under the car and really take a look at the exhaust system for leaks. That car is just so low, I don't often get the desire to hang under there much! The sound does have a nice rumble but I need to ascertain whether it's due to a leak or the resonator. BTW, about the resonator, what's it's purpose in life? The name implies a sound "enhancing" device to me, I dunno. When I get on it, it definitely lets me know and it does sound nice I must admit. It's the constant droaning sound on the hwy that gets on my nerve. Sort of similar to the droaning sound of my old 5.0 at 2k rpm!

Mine had a leak that was hidden by the heat shield, right at the opening of the driver's side cat. It was quite unnerving (especially when in concert with the heat shield buzz). It was a small leak, but, made a big noise. If you're so inclined, get a set of ramps. I, personally, don't like working under a raised automobile (unless I have a professional lift, which I don't), but, the ramps, for "peeking" purposes on some problems, make me feel a bit more secure. Make sure you chock the rear wheels.

The purpose of the resonator is to relieve the exhaust gas pressure pulse before exiting through the rear of the exhaust, it lowers the pressure at the back of the header before the next cylinder releases it's exhaust gas (pressure pulse), so as not to create any backwash of exhaust gas into the next emptying cylinder. all this creates a scavenging effect of exhaust gasses. Thats how I understand it to work anyway.

Me, engine work. Nah, just removed the engine and replaced the headgaskets the week of the 10th Anniversary Meet

Welcome to the network Ali. I have not done any flow bench testing of the EG33 heads and as for as I know no one else here has either. I live in Detroit, so finding an import tuning shop is rather difficult with all these muscle(head) cars around here. If I had a Mopar...... well, nevermind.

There is usually room for inprovement in flow numbers due to manufacturing tolerances, but I can't even offer a guess as to what difference there might be. I do have a spare engine for a play toy (paper weight, coffee table, conversation piece, yard ornament, etc) that I can work on, but I haven't done anything with it yet. One of these days.

Earl,
Closest I've ever seen to that sentiment on a t-shirt about Detroit were:

"Detroit - Where the weak are killed and eaten"

"I'm so bad I vacation in Detroit"
