A/C Cool on the Feet but not much from the vents

My A\C seems so-so this year, I can tell it is cool, but not icy and also it only seems to blow on my feet, which is nice for my feet, but not so good for the rest of my body. Not to mention the people in the back seat.

So my question is should I be getting cool air out of the vents in the dash or does it only come out near the floor?

Also is it difficult/expensive to have someone to recharge it? I was reading a thread about conversion vs using the old stuff and it sounded like you could still find the old stuff but not easily. Any advice?

Re: A/C Cool on the Feet but not much from the vents

The motor/track that switches the air flow is probably gunked up and needs to be cleaned and reagreased to allow it to switch functions properly. On these cars, if it is on colder settings, it will always blow through the vents, and when set to warmer temps, it will always blow through the floor. That is the way it is designed.

Re: A/C Cool on the Feet but not much from the vents

Look next to your right leg on the center tunnel and you'll see a rod actuator on the side of the AC unit that slides in a track to switch the flow from dash to floor. You should see it move when you change the temp from heat to cool. Might be stuck, track fulll of dirt.

Re: A/C Cool on the Feet but not much from the vents

Run the self diagnostic by holding OFF and AUTO buttons while turning the ignition to on. If memory serves, the air mix door and other servos' positions are detected and any stuck servo will display an error code. An easy way to check the refrigerant charge is to run the a/c and watch the compressor, it should never cycle off. If it does, and there are no error codes, it is probably low on refrigerant. Don't have the system retrofitted if it needs recharging, call around until you can find a local shop that has R-12 on hand if you have a 1992 year model.

Or maybe just take a quick look under there and see what is going on, like bwb3 said!

Re: A/C Cool on the Feet but not much from the vents

Reviving an old thread here. My SVX is still having some issues going to the top vent, cleaning the track and lubricating it has not entirely corrected the issue. I basically have Floor and Defrost working, and dash vents I can only get working by manually moving the lever. Even then it won't stay there, it will slip back to the floor after the car has been turned off and restarted.

I can reach down and pull the lever until it goes into the position which engages the top vents, but it never does it on it's own. Also when I move it, I feel a lot of resistance until it pops beyond a certain point.

I was thinking I really need to take it off so that I can take a better look at the action of the mechanism and to check if something is broken or not. Has anybody removed or replaced one these levers, if so how much of a pain is it to get back on and into position?

Sometimes I hear it clicking when it is stuck so I think the solenoid is working.

Re: A/C Cool on the Feet but not much from the vents

Well I am not sure if I ran this AC test right or not, but if I did am getting a Code 34 Mode Door Motor and Code 35 Intake Door Motor as well as a 13 Sunload sensor. That would make sense because while I was checking it out I felt no movement in the rod when I put it in the ac mode, and only very weak movement when put back in heat mode.

I have no idea of what to do to fix it.

Re: A/C Cool on the Feet but not much from the vents

You may have to replace the motor. They have nylon gears that wear down. Happened to me, motor worked but mix door wouldn't move.

Where is that motor located, is it behind the glove box or is it somewhere on the drivers side near that rod?

Blower motor... Behind glove box... Take out glove box...a "bunch of screws later", you will see it!
