Intake temperature sensor

I want to monitor my intake air temperature. I want to see what I have right now for a temp and as I do things to try to lower it I want to see how much of an effect they have on it both in temperature decrease and dyno differences. Any ideas? I want to tap the manifold near the top of one of the runners.

Significant Technical Input Registered SVX
Years ago I used a walmart/lowes outside temp probe inside of my airbox.
I used the readings to change my ram air setup.

I'm not sure exactly where you could mount the sensor, but you could always pull the sensor off the center rad support and rerun the wiring to get it where you want it.

That way, you already have the gauge on your climate control station, all you need to do is hit a button...

If you drill and tap the manifold you just have to make sure you get all the filings. Probably best to take the manifold off. Would a noncontact laser thermometer work? You can pick one up at some cheap place like Harbor Freight and see if that works.

You'd definately want to pull the intake before drilling & tapping it. Then blow it out REALLY well before firing it back up.

I'd think somewhere on one of the plenumms would be the most advantageous. Each runner on the intake will run a slightly diferent temp, due to airflow cooling the front, better than the back. Tapping into the large volume area would give a truer trading of intake air temp.

An old drag racer's trick is to put a bag of ice on the intake before a run. I've also seen dry ice in the airbox of a 5.0 Mustang.

I've often considered, what if you tapped into the A/C system, and added an evaporator into the airbox. I'm betting you could get 40degree air that way. However, I doubt there's enough room under the SVX hood for that.

Will the climate control button read high enough for me? I have only seen 108 on my car for outside temps.

Also...... Just talking to YT aobut it and he mentioned the difficulty of welding in a bung into the aluminum manifold.

hmmm.. good question???

Pour a cup of hot water on it????

I also wonder if it would have an effect on the climate control system?

How thick is the intake casting? If it's more than 1/4" anywhere that a sensor would work, you could just drill & tap the aluminum. After all, it's not like the sensor's going to be under any real stress.
Otherwise if there's a good, flat surface, you could bolt on a steel plate, with a bung welded to it. Use some epoxy to seal it, & viola.

The runners are definitely more than 1/4" thick. I think that if I tap the back side of the back runner on the driver side I should be good. My only question remaining is how high will the climate control read?
