Failed Emissions

Failed emissions on the Idle HC ppm reading in Virginia.

The chart goes as follows:

HC ppm Limit: 125 Reading: 251 Result: Fail
CO% Limit: 1.00 Reading: 0.32 Result: Pass
RPM: 606 VALID
Dilution: 14.9 VALID

I passed all of the tests @ 2500 RPM where the HC ppm reading was 56 while the limit is 125.

Ideas?

Thanks!

My recent inspections:

#1

hc limit-100 reading 287 fail

#2

hc limit-100 reading 485 failed again

#3

limit-still 100 reading 2128

there's something wrong with that. i tried guarenteed to pass after the first inspection and it jumped to 485. then replaced fuel filter after 2nd inspection and it jumped to 2128

I'm as lost as you are

I asked the guy after the 2nd time if i can drive it and he said yeah, just keep bringing it back every 45 days to get it re-inspected. If it fails, it fails, I can keep getting it re-inspected until it passes.

Just had my mothers car done... less than 5 minutes and everything perfect...

Toyotas ... *sigh*

Oh well, perhaps will head over to Professor Tom. Did you know he has a PhD in SVX Nano Uberchanics? That is he knows every single part of our cars by a sense of touch or smell or sound!

P.S.: Of course Young Tom would've been done by now

Okay, thanks for the suggestion, I did drive it for like 10-15 minutes but not on the highway and no where near the sixth speed

With a brand new Magnaflow 2-1 cat I scored 33 HC ppm at idle and 28 at 2500 RPM (limit 200. Ya, things are easier up here I guess )

Make sure to get everything warmed up. The catalyst in your catalitic converters needs to be at operating temperature to work properly, and a warm engine will show less emmisions. Stomp the pedal a couple times on the way there to burn off any stuborn carbon deposits, and try not to shut the car off before it gets inspected.

Will try it again next weekend, the only thing I am worried about that I do indeed have an oil leak.
