water pump

One of the screws that holds the water pump on (the lower right looking down at the pump) was difficult to get out. All of the others came out easily. The offending screw was a battle the whole way. I thought that I was going to break it off at any time. But it came out. The threads of the screw look fine. I think that it might have been cross threaded by the last person who replaced the pump - if it ever was replaced. None of the screws that came out easily would screw into the offending hole.

Should I just get a tap and retap the hole? Anybody happen to know the size of the screw? I'm hoping that I can retap with the same size tap just to clean up the threads.

The pump that I took off had a paper gasket. The replacement (which is a real pita to get back in) is metal. Does it matter? Should I use gasket sealant or just slap the metal one in and forget it? BTW, I found that you can use mechanics picks (or a hangar cut into pieces about 6" long) to line the gasket and pump with the engine holes and it makes the job a lot easier. Tie wrap the two small water hoses out of the way and it's almost too easy.

It was a good time to change the pump because the old pump's impeller? was very loose. Not sure if it's an impeller, its the part on the inside of the pump that's attached to the timing belt roller. There's about 3/4" play between the two. I don't think that it would have lasted much longer. There's no play in the new one.

Can't you tell the size by the good screws that came out of it?

Is that how you got it, or did you go to a parts list and check it out there?

I went to SubaruParts.com and found it under water pump. I could have taken a bolt down to Lowes and tried to fit a nut to it but this way was mucho easier. I'm getting ready to attempt the retap shortly.

That number doesn't give the thread pitch. It just gives diameter (6), Thread length (40) and shoulder length (20). The number needed for the tap will be something like 6x1.0 or 6x1.5??

Take a good bolt along and find a nut that will fit it, then get that tap.

The tap worked great The new water pump is installed. I used a slight coat of RTV and the hangar trick was awesome. How can we get this added to the timing belt procedure?
