Problems or issues using wiring harness/ecu and engine of different years?

What, if any, issues exist in trying to use a MY wiring harness/ecu with a different MY engine?

Reason I am asking... I have a chance to pick-up a 1996 svx shell (with good tranny) for practically nothing, and a line on a 92 eg33.

Is it possible to use this engine with the 96 ecu and wiring harness, or are there engine attachments that will not mate?

I am in California, land of Smog Nazi's, so it must be able to pass emissions... if not I guess I have keep looking for a 96 or 97 eg33.

Quick secondary question... where is the vin stamped on the engine? This way I can verify the model year. Thanks.

Welcome to the site. I am not sure where the VIN is stamped, or if it is stamped on the engine. I know it is on the plate on the post of the drivers door. Good luck with the project.

Oooooops I forgot the other question. There are not differences in the wireing harnesses of the different years that I know of. There is a difference in the self diagnostic systems though and it that is part of it, that would be different.

But I should be able to just wire it up though? From everything that I have gathered over the last couple months, there were not actual changes to the engine itself over the entire production run... so the ecu just adjusts differently then (the self diagnostics)?

main difference is in one solenoid. It is an intake solenoid that in 96&97 engines was mounted on the strut tower and not under the intake. Instead of feeding vaccum from the top pass side of the TB it feeds from the pass side intake runner. N big deal, just adapt it however it needs to be.

Thanks Tom, that sounds manageable. I am going to take a look at the shell tomorrow... hopefully if things work out right I should be picking up the shell and the engine for under $850! If I get lucky I could be getting into an SVX for close to a grand! *fingers crossed*
