All wheel drive engage problem

A few weeks ago when I was driving home during the snow/ice storm we received here in PA I was attempting to go up some snow covered hills. I assumed my all wheel drive system would function properly and I would have no problems making it up the hill, however that was not the case. My back wheels kept on slipping and everytime I would hit the gas to move my entire drive-train felt like it was not engaging properly and felt like it was going to fall apart. It felt like the rear wheels would not engage properly with the front wheels.

I am hoping someone else may have experienced something simliar and could give me some insight as to what to check and look for so I can fix this issue and have my all wheel drive system working normal. Thanks in advance.

It is hard for me to underestand what is happening from your description.
Do you have four matched tires, same size, brand, tread depth?
Were the front wheels outrunning the rear wheels? (TPS, F/R clutch)
Or were the rear wheels outrunning the fronts? ( VERY uncommon)
Tom.

Are the tires and wheels the same? I thought of the same thing Tom did. Something does not sound right.

Tires are all the same and the wheels are all the same. Basically it felt like the front wheels would slip and would try to transfer power to the rear wheels however it felt like my entire drivetrain was vibrating hard trying to engage, kinda felt like my engine and transmission were going to fall out from the car.

I don't know how else to describe it but to say it felt like something wasn't lining up properly or engaging properly. I am pretty familiar with cars and most of the mechanical and operational parts but I have not studied the all wheel drive system all too much so I am unsure as to the part names. I know that the transmission probably has a transfer case such as on my eclipse awd and connects to a drive shaft which then connects to a limited slip differential and then connects to the rear gears.

I apologize if I am not making much sense but I'm trying to figure out how the easiest way is to word what I experienced with my SVX. Thanks in advance.

What kind of surface was it? Was it snow or sheer ice. If it was slick ice, maybe it was having trouble getting traction on all 4 wheels so it felt like that. Just another guess.

It was snow, I was slipping and sliding going up the hill so I pulled aside for a minute and let a 4 wheel drive Jeep go around me and they seemed to not slip at all. Like I said before, the front wheels were going and slipping and the back wheels just felt like they would not grip. I am under the impression that all four wheels should spin and grip at the same time.

The rear wheels on a SVX auto tranny are controled be a clutch pack operated by a solinoid...sounds like one or the other aren't functioning properly....both can be service with the tranny in the car.

So are you saying that my tranny could be acting up to cause this? or that if I service my tranny this should help to identify and rectify the problem? Thanks.

I'm saying you can replace either or both the Duty Solinoid "C" or the Transfer clutches while the tranny is in the car.

You are about 128.55 miles from TomsSVX in Philadelphia.
Stop in this coming Sunday, He is having a mini-meet, let him drive it, or me if I am there, and before you spend any money, He/we can tell you if your car is ok or not.
Party at Young Toms house, and Tom is buying!

Ouch, hopefully it wasn't to bad. There's always the parting out section where you can get almost an entire replacement car.

Well it is still driveable but now I am going to need a hood, driver's side fender, front bumper cover, driver's side headlight and corner/turn signal light, and a few other things now. I'll check that out when I get a chance to fix it in a few months since I'll be away at work until June.
