Thin Synthetic Oil

I was discussing types of oil with the Nissan tech who teaches my automotives class and he seems to think that by my using synthetic Castrol 10W14 in the SVX, i'm going to experience more blow-by and oil loss into the combustion chamber because the molecules in synthetic are thinner. To back this up, he said the tolerances of an old subaru engine aren't going to be the same as a modern car.

Am I doing harm by using Castrol Syntec?

any oil recomendations, I was going to switch over to the high mileage oil as soon as I hit 140-150K

The Subaru manual says to not use anything LESS than 10W30 and actually recommends going higher 10W40 and higher in "high load conditions".... I am running standard dino 10W30 oil at the moment. Was running Mobil 1 Synthetic 10W30 but I noticed that on high RPM decelleration I was getting oil burn off out of the tail pipes... Switched to dino and everything was fine... When the warmer weather comes back I'll be going to atleast 10W40 dino
