hp from 230 to 220
Hi folks!
A few weeks, I have only read the new posts, but now I have again one question: The 1992 SVX has 230 hp, like mine. Later the SVX has 10 hp (220) lesser. In which modelyear the changed this? What techniqual changes Subaru did, that the motor has 10 hp lesser and why? Did this changes also make the topspeed and acceleration lesser or not? Thank a lot and a nice weekend! Kusi |

This is also my understanding. The SVX engine, to my knowledge, has never been less than 230hp. Perhaps you're thinking of the speed limiter that was added in '94 that dropped top speed by about 10 mph, but, as far as horsepower, I've never heard of a drop. May be a European thing.

Yes, it can be, thats an European or Swiss thing. I became 2 emails, what two Swiss SVX Drivers ask me this. I think, I will ask onetime Subaru Switzerland and will write down the answer in this forum.

Torque
I believe (through the haze) that the SVX was advertised with 230 HP and 220 lb-ft of torque. Just checked subarusvx.com and found that actually 228 torque. Ahhhh, what those marketing guys will do....
I have always gotten the figures mixed |

Hi!
Ok, I become today answer from Subaru Switzerland. It's really so, that SVX from modelyear 1993 have official in Switzerland 220 hp. Because of law about exhaust (I hope everybody check my bad english) they adjust the electronic of the motorfieldmanagement (?), unfortunatelly I don't now the exact word on english. The technic and electronic components are the same. But he wrote, that there is nearly no difference in acceleration, tourque etc. against the 230 hp version. Kusi |

Very interesting. Thanks for the research. I'll make sure the next one I buy isn't Swiss spec. Gotta have that extra 10 HP!

It sounds like what you're refering to is an adjustment made to the Engine Control Unit (ECU). This adjustment was made to comply with emissions standards? I wonder what adjustments they made.

This is two technical problem sorted, thank you. How did Subaru reduce the stated HP output figure [and why], and why did they paint some of them yellow? The answers are obvious, for the Swiss market. Only question left now, is why did they not paint the holes on the yellow ones?? Joe Randy will be cheesed off this one before it's over.

JDM models
The JDM models are quoted as 240ps (237 bhp).
Could be different fuel grades???? paddlesnz JAPAN |

Euro Vs JDM Vs US
Paul
I noticed this a long time ago. It may be as you say, differences in the quality of the available petrol. However, I tend to the view that is is more fundamental than that. It may be that the Japanese method for measuring PS does not adhere to DIN standards, and so they come up with bigger figures than someone measuring according to European methodology. In motorcycle magazines, I am into bikes also, journalists tend to refer to this effect by saying that Japanese ponies are notoriously puny. It could well be that the export cars are fuel mapped differently to stay within intended market emissions limits. With the bikes, when they are dyno'd, there is a big step or dip in the power curve at 4500RPM. This is engineered in so the bikes stay within noise Decibel limits, which are measured at this rev point. Honourable Japanese engineers have a fair idea what they are doing, even if their ponies are puny at times. Joe

Not to mention that when you build ten engines you'll end up with ten different sets of numbers from the dyno. Plus the marketing department gets to toss in their two yen's worth.
