I'm wondering that myself. That's way too high of a failure rate. My rear bearings are now close to 4 years old with 70,000 miles. Replacing them 3 times in 2 years sounds like either bad installation, cheap parts, or bad hubs. He might even have wheel nuts torqued too high.

Most likely bad hubs.

Timken bearings are not any better or worse in quality than NTN. However, they may not be specifically designed for this application. Does anyone have the Timken part no. and NTN part no. (not the Subaru one) to check on the specs? I have both Timken and NTN catalogs sitting in front of me right now.

I work for a bearing manufacturer. We buy Timken inserts for one of our product lines. Quality is decent but they absolutely destroy us on price.

Part Nos

Both Federal Mogul and Timken show that bearing number 516003 will fit the SVX.

In answer to earlier posts---I have NO VESTED interest in Timken and admit that I have NOT used them in any of my SVXs as I buy OEM parts mostly at repair shop prices. However, over the years I have used many Timken bearings for applications from lawn mower jack shafts to heavy equipment and huge farm tractors (475 HP units with 8 wheels taller than I am--6'). I have been satisfied with the product and feel it is every bit as good as Federal Mogul---while I will not say it is necessarily better.

Bearing Failure Rate...

is due to improper install. First time, no high temp grease. Same knuckleheads did second install...not sure what they did wrong but I am sure they didn't follow the correct install procedure.
As for the Timken bearings, I was v. disappointed in the bad feedback. Back in the day Timkens were the best money could buy. I used them in my Yamaha two stroke race bike engine in '71. They were v. big with hot rodders. Timken was the brand. However, Timken no longer has a good rep amongst the professional mechanics of my aquaintence. Particularly in this application.
