Wheel Bearing Consequences
Hi all,
3 of my wheels are making the dreaded "snow tire" roar. Not too bad below 65 mph, but pretty loud at 70. My question is, how long can you drive this way? What are the signs of bearing failure? My dealer wants $375/wheel to change them, is this about right? I also have a leaky power steering rack, $1100 to replace at the dealer. It doesn't leak enough to see at the dipstick, so I'm inclined to live with it. Any advice? Roald Lutz 92 Claret SVX 103,000 miles |

The longer you drive it, the more expensive it wil get. There is no telling how long it will last. I had one last many thousands of miles when it got loud. I also had one that only lasted a couple hundred before it got significantly worse.
It will get more expensive because you may have to replace the housing as well. $375 per wheel is not a bad price at all. ~$100 for parts alone.

Is it bearings or tire noise? I been in cars that I thought it was wheel bearings and when the tires were changed, it got quiet! Might be something to consider. One of mine (steering rack) has a leak and my mechanic said to live with a very small drip, but if it got worse, do something with it at that time. Good luck.

I bought my own bearings for 60 dollars each. Had a local mechanic install them for 75 dollars each. The dealers estimate you got is just about right.

Wheel Bearings
Thanks all,
I should've realized the housing could be damaged by ingnoring the bearings. I'm going to get 'em changed. |

Dealer?
Which dealer provided the estimate? Galles & Davis? Or the other one? Just curious in case I need to have it done and don't do it myself.

Dealer
Garcia Subaru at Lomas & Pennsylvania.
They seem pretty good, had them change my transmission fluid and fix the air conditioner. Somehow, they got confused and changed my oil too. No charge; can't complain... |

I also recommend confirming whether it's the bearings or tire noise. The easy way to tell is that if the sound changes when the road changes then it's the tires.
