Car and Driver September Issue...p.38

"2005 Subaru Legacy....The bread-and-butter cars get a huge bump in horsepower"

Interesting article. The SVX is mentioned several times.

"Everyone loved the SVX as soon as we discontinued it." A Subaru executive is quoted as saying....

Then KEEP THE PRICE DOWN (many of us had to wait for years to be able to afford a used SVX), make it striking, give it some power (250hp is nice; 280 is better), promote it correctly, and maybe you won't make the same sales mistake twice.

Don,

IMHO, a new SVX would cost in the $45-50k range and compete with the RX-8, various Lexi, BMW's, etc. A new Subaru SVX would be a sales flop. The Subaru name does not have the cache' of a BMW. They need to market their upscale cars under a new separate brand name like Lexus, Accura, Infinity, etc. Maybe they should try the name Alcyone.

heh..

i'll bet that within about six years (by 2010) we'll see a Subaru vehicle competing with the likes of Lexus, Infiniti, BMW, etc.

Subaru seems to be following a very linear path towards the upscale vehicle market. Compare today's Legacy Sedan to a DL or GL from 1989... I don't imagine that Subaru will start moving back down the ladder, instead it will likely move up. It'd be really nifty to see a reborn SVX, but it certianly won't be CALLED the SVX (see: brat/baja)

it's likely we'll see a pretty serious sports/tourer from FHI (i'm hoping it'll have a turbocharged H-6 3.0), but I don't think it'll carry the "quirks" of the SVX..

I agree with Larry. However, you can not have a upscale division (alcyone) with just 2 cars. Original Alcyone and Alcyone SVX. IMHO, FHI/SOA should add a couple of car/rebadge a couple more cars under different name and release them together with B11S. Not that I like B11S but it could be a good move.

New Legacy

Well, the new Legacy pictured in the magazine gets a thumbs up from me; it's a nice looking piece indeed. Not the exotic styling of the SVX, but not the old appliance styling of the past either. I think it actually looks much like the Blitzen, only better.

Now lets see, what to name the new Subaru upscale division...

Should have SOMETHING of a star group connection....Zodiac is a boat...Taurus and Scorpio have been used before...Cancer sure wouldn't fly....only Pontiac could use Capricorn (The "Goat").... Aquarius sounds too "New Age"....Virgo? Sagittarius?

....Libra has a nice ring to it.

A planet perhaps? Mercury and Saturn are taken and Jupiter was used a long time back. Uranus? No butts about it, that wouldn't be a good choice. Pluto is Mickey's dog....Mars is too warlike. The use of "Neptune" is all wet. Venus? Naaaaaaa....Asteroid sounds like something that needs Preparation H. Comet has been used. Meteor was a train on the Seaboard rail line. Nissan has used Pulsar. Black Hole? (that's where your payments go....) Galaxy belongs to Ford....Nova was a Chevy....

I'll have to give this some more thought.......

So how about Sirius?
Yeah, I know, it's the DOG star, but it's the brightest star we got, at least when standing on this planet.

PLUS - Ad campaign - HE, "I'm gonna buy a Honda Prelude"! SHE, "WHAT? Not me, I'm gonna get Sirius"!

Hold applause please.

Ron (counting future royalty money).

Getting Sirius about a new name...

Jimmy ("I'll punch you in the nose!") Spencer has the Sirius (satellite radio) dog all over his Dodge, so I'm afraid that won't work Ron.....Uranus is not open to discussion....right Larry?

How about some moons? (refasten those pants RIGHT NOW Randy!!)

Callisto (wasn't that used on a show car?)

Ariel

Hyperion

Miranda (hey....Mercedes is a girl's name too!)

--------------

Maybe we could just INVENT a new name?

Upscale price with a down scale name...

Not to state the obvious but Volkswagen is treading there already. Is there going to be a need for rebadging? The all new VW Phaeton is starting at $50,000.00. Is anyone going to buy one? I would guess it will make it alright. Look at the prices of the passats ot jetta lately... As mentioned earlier FHI has moved into the (almost) $40,000.00 price pange as it is and seems to be selling there stuff (anyone checked the price on an H-6 VDC) Maybe in my neck of the woods it is some popular thing but there a crap load on the roads for the first time... In the 80's and 90's (when I was becoming a Subaru fanatic) I hardly ever saw any Subarus on the roads here. As the price goes up there are more and more. If VW sells Phaetons then there is no doubt Subaru can sell B11S or whatever the next Subaru is... I know I am in line for it no matter the price!

i agree completely - if VW has the cojones to sell a $50,000 hunk o' junk like the Phaeton (i think VW's are built only slightly worse than Dodges ), then Subaru shouldn't think twice about it. the Outback VDC's are already kinda like 'affordable upscale'. i don't think it would be a shock to anyone if Subaru introduced something soon that was north of $40,000.
