If you flat spotted or bent a wheel when you slid into the curb a balance job cannot fix. must replace wheel or have it repaired.

Just picked the car up from the dealer.
Here's what Jim(Only Subaru Mechanic at Dan Wolf Subaru) found: 1)The front right axle is bad, and needs to be replaced. The vehicle definetly vibrated the front right wheel in from of the mechanic on the lift. They do not have a rebuilt unit in their catalog, so the new one costs $420...Is that about the right price? 2)The right rear wheel bearing is going, I noticed a sound but not being familiar with the SVX wasn't sure if it was the wheel bearing. Jim said it was $95 for the bearing, $45 for seals, and 1.5 hours labour. 3)The Trany mount bolt is bent, and perhaps messed up the trany mount. No part price yet, but 1.5 hrs labour. So thanks to all of you who guessed right. Many of you said CV's, and some said trany mount, your both right. The wheel bearing noise wasn't noticable when I picked up the car, but 1000 miles later, its definately getting louder. I plan to stay in Chicago a few more days to get these items repaired. BTW, I still love this car.

Chris,
Rebuilt axles are in the range of $125 - $150, though dealers may not carry them... Subaruparts.com sells the original ones for $330. Buyer Beware though, I went the rebuilt route, and 3rd time it still isn't the charm. VK Eh! |

Thanks for the info, just checked Subaruparts.com, and they add another $85 for shipping, so it works out to the same price. Plus I would have to expedite as I'm not sticking around for 4-10 business days.
Th rebuilt idea would be nice, but I don't want to do it twice, since the front shafts are both the same, I'll keep the old unit and get it rebuilt if the left shaft shows signs of wear. Just a note: Jim at Dan Wolf Subaru on 6060 S LaGrange in LaGrange Il. Has the skills it takes to service your SVX, and really does appear to know what he is doing, and does an excellent job at understanding urgent vs do it later. Now that I've said that, perhaps I should wait and see

Yup, I saw that Leslie, go figure.
Timing is everything, but its a little rich for my blood(budget). or is it??? When I get home I will definately want to look at it. I have to tell you the SVXcess pearlie is just so clean I can't imagine a nicer car. BTW, I just added a JVC 12CD changer(FM) 2 days ago. Works great, but I'm trying find the right place to mount it, I don't want to drill any holes, or add any tacky 2sided tape, so the remote is just sitting under the emergency brake handle. Thx to Lwin for saving me at least 3 hours. Oh, and Chicago has a radio station at every optional frequency for the CD Changer, so the sound should be better when I get it home. JVC 12CD Changer from Circuit City=$143.00

OK, Jim found that the FR Axle was bad, replaced it, now smooth as silk.
He also found a bad RR bearing, replaced it, now its quiet. And the bent Trany mount was actually totally broken, I have both pieces in my trunk, aswell as the old trans-axle. So the vibration is now resolved.

I am glad to hear that with all of the details, you still love the car. It is too bad that you had to have the trouble right off the get go!! Looking forward to getting together with you soon.
