power steering pump no go
I have a 94 SVX FWD that we bought new in 95. It has been a wonderful car. I drive it everyday. Unfortunately, the power steering appears to be dying. I just replaced the shreaded belt. It seems to be sufficiently tight. However, i am getting belt squeel and have noticed that the pump actually stops turning which causes the squeeling.
How difficult is it replacing the pump and where should I purchase from? This will be my first mecanical forey into this car. I am looking forward to the challenge. Any help would be appreciated. happy trails karmaken

Is the belt tensioned well enough? How old is it?
If you take the belt off, can you turn pump by hand? |

Ops sorry - did not read your mail. Still, you should be able to turn pump by hand clockwise, you should feel resistance, but it should be smooth, not getting stuck.
I've purchased ps pump online (don't remember the name of the shop) for $100. Works OK. At that price you don't get to choose speed sensitive vs engine sensitive - steering feel may be lighter or heavier than original. Replacement is easy, but a bit messy - one bolt on the back, 3 bolts in front accessed via holes in the pulley, high pressure line, low pressure line and the pump is out. Make sure you have torx keys to remove the reservoir. |

Thanks for the replys. Is there a significant difference between the aftermarket pumps and a Subaru purchased one. How would I determine if the pump is speed or engine sensitive. My wife has weak wrists and easier to turn would be better for her.
Thanks in advance happy trails kcv

Aftermarket pumps are the rebuilt pumps, not new.
They work OK, but they are not new. Try to find a pump with a lifetime warranty. Vehicle speed sensitive pump should produce higher pressure - lesser effort (it relies on a solenoid valve in the steering rack to reduce power assist at high speed). Externally they are identical, internally the difference is in the shape of the valve and maybe some fluid passages, but you can't see it without disassembly. Subaru part numbers are obviously different. |
