jacks and jackstands

to start off let me say great site!

in keeping with scheduled maintainance. i've had problems jacking up the SVX. i don't want to use the spare tire jack cause it is a p.o.s. i've had problems with floor jacks not being low enough or not lifting the car high enough or the handles being too long or short making it a pain jack the thing up!

so my question is does anyone have a brand/model of jack and jackstands that work well? do ramps work better? what do you use to lift and work under your SVX? PLEASE let me know.

along the same lines does the SVX need to be on 2 or 4 jackstands when changing the oil or tranny fluid? does it need to be leaned to the drivers side when changing the tranny fluid (the drain plug is on that side) to get all the fluid out. i've had problems with the tranny not draining all the way.

i'm a fairly new SVX maintainer and would appreciate any tips!!

I use the sissor jack all the time in my gravel drive way. It works fine. I actually have two and can work both together at the sametime on the same side. I just did this a few weeks ago to put jack stands under the car. The ones in the front, stands that is, have a long 6" flat section in the middle that I use under the sub frame. The ones in the back have two points and I use them near the edge of the body that is thick, near the sub frame attachment. I drive the SVX up on 2x8's before using a floor jack and raise the back first. I also drive up on 2x8's to raise the front of SVX to change engine and I drive up on 6x6's, all 4 wheels to change trans fluid.

i got a nice 2.5 ton jack in a molded case at Walmart for around $30. the feature i like about it is the safety bar that slides through the arm to add some additional protection if it should fail. i got matching jack stands there, too. here's a pic of the 'safety bar.'

My next jack will be

an AC Hydraulics unit from Denmark like one of these beauties

Very low to get under the car and can reach up to 29"!

I think I like this one better...Sure it's $2626.50 but it'd be awfully nice to have around

jacks

I use a Lincoln 2.5 ton jack for most everything. Getting under the racecar is quite a bit tougher than getting under the svx

I havea 3.5 ton floor jack I bought at Sam's Club. I tried one of the 2.5 ton jacks, but I didn't want to have to take the handle out to lower it. It sounds picky, but it was worth the extra expense to me. Mine has a much bigger footprint than the 2.5 ton models, too.

The jack does not fit well under the SVX - particularly in the rear. So I made 'SVX to garage adapters.'

They're four foot-long pieces of 1x8. The jack fits under the car nicely with these adapters in place under each wheel.

I'll make you a set and sell them to you for only $49.95, plus shipping and handling.

Or you can have the prototypes, signed by me, for $99.95.

Anyway, I don't mess around with jacks or jackstands. The SVX weighs 3,600 pounds, so I got a jack rated at twice that. Same with my stands - they're a 3.5 ton set, as well.

It just occurred to me that you can see my jack (and maybe my stands - didn't look for them) in several of the photos in the 'tranny install' folder in my locker. Since that's not my garage, it means that I hauled that thing, my stands and the tranny jack down with me.

As cool as that is, I don't know how useful it would really be. There are so many repairs I couldn't do with a car on that thing, I don't see why I'd buy it.

I certainly wouldn't have been able to replace my tranny on it. There's too much structure underneath and in the way - you can't roll under any part of the car, save the corners, without having something in your way.
