Potential SVX owner

I found an svx and I've always liked them. I am a car enthusiast looking for a new DD with potential. I'm just looking to hear from SVX owners directly the truth. Mostly on reliability? I know subies tend to be more reliable, is that true for the SVX too? I have always liked their style since I first saw one on GT2 then on Loaded weapon. I've read some decent reviews on performace, but I can't find word on reliability or whether they are relativly easy to work on.(For someone who has good knowledge of cars) General insurance costs? Basic pros and cons of the svx world...
Also how is part sourcing, replacment and aftermarket? Lot's of ?'s for a curious car lover.
thanks nick

Re: Potential SVX owner

Reliability is a hard question to answer as it really pertains to previous owner and how it was taken care of. If it wasnt beaten to hell then it should last a while without to many problems, but keep in mind your dealing with an almost 20 year old car design here (2011 will mark the 20th birthday for many 92 models). There are quite a few svx with well over 200,000 miles and even some with 300,000 on the road. Simple maintenance and not beating the living hell out of it will probably have it last for awhile. Just if something is wrong get it fixed sooner rather then later. I'm sure once you drive on you will be set on having one.

As far as working on them it really depends on what is wrong . Somethings are simply to swap out and honestly timing and things of that nature were not too hard to get to. This site has many write ups and quite a few specialist that really enjoyed being bothered with simply questions *cough* OT *cough*.

Re: Potential SVX owner

Ive found my SVX pretty good. The only major problem on mine was that 2nd on my auto slips badly. but i still drive it
and the only other thing i had to do is water pump and that was quite easy to do
I will always own an svx

Re: Potential SVX owner

Keep in mind that with owning a SVX, you will alternate between wanting to spend all your money upgrading the SVX and wanting to sell the SVX so that you are not spending all of your money on it. But if you work on your own cars, you should be able to do almost any troubleshooting or repair with the help of the info on this board. Most any part can be found at Subaruparts.com or from someone parting out a wreck. Getting windshields can be a headache, I would avoid cars with badly cracked windshields (ones that wouldn't pass state inspection).

Re: Potential SVX owner

I was set on mine before I got in it. I did not even know these cars existed until I saw a little add in the local car trader. Googled it and bam had to have it. I wouldn't mind owning another, I have convinced my mother to buy one(come new year she is getting one she hopes) , she is tired of her big car and tries to drive mine when ever possible (I hide the keys )

Re: Potential SVX owner

I wanted the first SVX I saw when they first showed up at the dealers. No way to afford to buy one.

If I had the Bill Gates money I would drive a SVX.
I think it is the most comfortable, safest car money can buy.
( I would probably get a new paint job in that case though

Go for it!

Re: Potential SVX owner

I would also add that since the svx was in limited production, most of the time when you need parts...they will not be available locally. my radiator a while back and i couldn't get one anywhere locally. also spent more on it than other radiators i've ordered for other cars.

so keep in mind you will have to wait for parts and you will pay a higher premium.

other than that, it's a normal car....with occasional tranny issues....
