the rubber between the two pieces will break lose and it will allow the outer ring of the pulley to move in and out and run against the timing cover. the smoke is from the timing cover melting and I am sure that is where you are getting the rattling sound as well. Get your car down to my house and I will hook you up with a good one

Tom i'd love to come to your house but there is no way I can drive it the way it is right? I mean with it smoking like that and melting stuff... I could always drive to ur place tomorrow morning in the legacy or my brothers car and get the one u have and me and omar can put it in my car.
