Exclamation The weirdest noise...

So I get in my car last night, start her up and there a knocking sound...Like an old rollercoaster going up the hill. Could this be bad gas? So I cautiously drive it and about a hundred yards down the road, the car emits this high pitched buzz...I really don't know how to describe it. I was majorly disconcerting So I put her in neutral, and shut the engine off...the knocking stopped but the whine stayed and then finally dissapeared a minute later. Sorry for the long and disjointed post, but anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Hmmmm.....yes very strange...what happened after that?Did you start it and all was well,or leave it,get it towed..etc.Did it feel like it was firing on all cylinder's?Don't know what to say.....my thought's with the buzz is an electrical issue, since it stayed after shutting off,but I'm assuming the key was still in the on pos since it was in neutral at shut down.Posibly the abs pump/relay???How did the brake's feel???....

the car feels and drives fine except for the noise....Like rocks rolling around somewhere. I didn't get the buzzing when I just took it for a ride though. I was thinking ABS but the brakes felt fine as well. More and more I think stuck valve. Wouldn't there be a performance drop with that though? Permanent damage??

So this would be apposed to the "other" wierd sound you get when accelerating?

Ussualy a sound like rocks rolling around is never good, but it's also usually easy to find! So other than the noise it runs, shifts, and stops fine?

Ok, for the buzz sound, I'm going to go with like most of the other people and say either rad fans or internal fans (the ones that blow the air in the car).

As for the knocking, fuel pump perhaps? Sounds like it's not getting enough gas.

Well, the plot thickens...

The noise is not consistent with the RPM of the engine, so I don't think it's lifter/valve noise. When I left work this morning, I let the car warm up, listening to the noise. A few times there was a screech, like a slipping belt, and the noise went away for a second or two... So I go to pull away from my parking spot, turn on my headlights, and a hiss of static comes from my speakers...and the radio was off...Then, a few moments later the beeeping/buzzing noise from the engine bay. That sound is definately electronic in nature...almost like something shorting...

My conclusion, either the car is haunted, or the altenator is bad. Would that cause the noises? I really think this is the cause...Thanks for all the help so far.

Oh yea, and otherwise it runs fine....except for the whistling exhaust

Well I suppose, have you opened the hood and looked for anything wrong looking?

Yes, several times. The belts look fine, everything is turning OK as far as I can see. Any way to test if it's the altenator acting buggy, or just wait until it breaks? Haha...

Ok, so after disconnecting the Acc. belt, it is NOT the altenator. However the sound, which has become an intermittent squeal/knock, seems to be coming from inside the plastic cam covers, just under the AC compressor.... I'm going to do a seach to see what I come up with. In the meantime ...

Update-

Seach results: The Idler pulley on the timing belt tensioner is on its way out... Maybe that freer-flowing Subafreak exhaust was too much, and the old bird gave up the ghost Tri-state may not be happening for me

What area of the car does the whine come from? Perhaps it's the fuel pump or the passenger?

A tragic ending to my problem....

I went to get my inspection sticker today. Long story short I got the sticker, got back in my car...drove down the street. Suddenly the temp gauge shoots to the top, and I pull over. My sound was the water pump all along! It seized and ate the timing belt Total kaput. Thank god for the non-interference, or else I would have left it on the side fo the road (It was a loooong day) The good news, it died in front of a Suby dealership So it looks like they're replacing the pump and belt....so much for doing it on my own...I'm afraid of the bill
