Thumping in Reverse?

I have a '92 SVX with 80k miles which I have owned since 8/91. Fell in love when I saw it at the '90 NY Auto Show.

Aside from the torque converter and transmission, which were replaced under warranty, I have had no other significant problems with this car.

For quite a while the front end has made thumping noises when going in reverse with the wheels turned all of the way in either direction. It has slowly gotten worse. Now you can feel the front moving around in the same situation. I have always assumed that this was the u-joints wearing out and that I would replace them when they began making noice when going forward. However, there is still no noise going forward and I am wondering if I have a safety problem here.

If it is the u-joints is this a DIY job ( I am a very handy shade tree). If not, what should I expect to pay per side.

TIA, John

Not sure, but I think you should check the rear transmission mount.

You guys are great! I checked it yesterday and it has separated cleanly.

What are the best places to source a non-performance part such as a transmission mount?

Unfortunately, there are no aftermarket replacements. You'll have to go to your dealer or, www.subaruparts.com, or, (I see you're in the "east") if you're close to Liberty Subaru, you could call and get the "Car and Driver" discount.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the heads up. Mine is also doing this.

Am having the car tracked by laser tomorrow, and will check the mounts.

Hopefully a mount will be broken , and it will save me the price of a tranny.

Joe

I assume that I must use the original SVX rear transmission mount. Will the STI mount fit the stock automatic without modification?

Your only choice is a stock mount. The STi mounts are for the manual transmissions only and the mounts are different.

How, exactly, do you "check" a mount? I've never done it before, and will be underneath the car today, sooo... May as well have a look.

Is it the same procedure for both engine and tranny mounts?
