Non-SVX: voltage fluctuations

I spent the entire weekend in my friend's garage helping him with his '91 Impulse RS. He said he was seeing voltage fluctuations. We had the alternator tested, replaced the battery and redid a dodgy battery connection. By the time I left last night, the car was on the ground and delivering better voltage than it had. Unfortunately a test drive after I left showed that the symptoms were still there.

Any ideas? He says that the voltage stays way below normal and occasionally fluctuates up to the normal range briefly.

FYI, getting the alternator out of (and back into) the Impulse was a weekend job. You have to remove the right-side axle, which means of course that you have to to take apart the suspension and drain the transaxle and transfer case. Well honestly, we probably didn't need to drain both, but he did before I got there. Filling the transaxle involves this plug on the left side of the case, and it's at such a weird angle that I had to pull out the left axle to get it off. Urgh.

BANG!!! Ting! Ting-ta-ting-ting-ting...

Him: 'Uh...what was that noise?'

Me: 'Oh, that? That was the sound of victory.'

Him: 'Um...if that was the sound of victory...then I don't want you to win any more.'

so you didn't actually replace the alternator??

Mine & other's SVX alternators test fine even though we know something's wrong with them.

Granted it's not an SVX but who says it can't have similar problems?

Actually we've determined by now that the alternator is, in fact, the problem. We hope.
