OT- High Performance Exotic Vehicle

Rosie and I went to look at a high performance exotic vehicle yesterday. It's blue and white and has real sleek styling. It has 2 motors and 5 wheels. Unfortunately, it's priced more than a Ferrari pound for pound.

Let me backtrak a little. A while back we had the carpets cleaned by a dry chemical process. They did a nice job. Anywhy before the cleaning the guy vacuumed the carpets. I had vacuumed the night before with our old Kirby upright. This is the Mack truck of vacuums. It will suck up the floorboards if your not careful. Anyway, Rosie said that the guy picked up more cat hair out of the rug with his vacuum cleaner than she thought was possible.
She said she tried his vacuum and was amazed at how light weight and easy to manuever that it was. She said that it was a professional model canister type and got the make & model number. I recognized the make of the unit. It was the one my mom had when I was a kid (I'll bet that old one is still running somewhere).

The Kirby finally died this weekend. The motor burned out after 28 years. Maybe I should have oiled it, at least once.
Anyway, we are going to take the high performance exotic vehicle home for a test drive this coming weekend. BTW, it's an Electrolux.

My mom had an Electrolux. They suck.

Those are about the best (and seemingly least known) vacuums in the universe. Hope you enjoy your new "ride".

Exotic mid-engined sucker

Larry, make sure Rosie only uses synthetic. Pet hairs, I mean.

I often wondered if Electrolux is an American [read US] company. At one time their marketing slogan here was

"Nothing sucks like an Electrolux"

Even here in Ireland, where we like our sex simple and our jokes complicated, this raised a few eyebrows and smiles.

Cool

Larry - Was this the Electrolux canister with "sled" type runners? Or was it an upright?
For another good unknown vac, try an old Royal upright. It looks like a "riced" roller skate.

Happy suction - Ron.

Ron,

My mom had a black and chrome, canister type Eletrolux vaccum cleaner. It had sled type runners.

The one that we looked at had 5 wheels, plus 2 more wheels on the nozzle. I guess that makes it a 7 wheeler. I wonder how many g's it can pull on a skid pad.

Joe & SFSVX,

Not only does Electrolux suck, it also blows.

I have fond memories of our family's old Electrolux. It was a tank type on skids. Push button and handle on top; rounded front that opened to get to the bag. The hose could be attached to the exaust to blow air in a particular direction.....toward my sister, usually.

Granny had a Kirby, and we have it downstairs somewhere. I once heard a Russian AN-24 transport with four turboprops, counter-rotating. Sounded exactly like a Kirby. Larry is correct; they could pull nails from floorboards. I think I remember a Jerry Lewis movie where he sucked a dog up in a Kirby. (no animals were hurt in the making of the scene)

re: electrolux

yeah, i remember those electrolux. actually a small electrolux store opened near my old job. did not last more than 8 months though, but the demo's they gave were cool. especially those ones they equip in new homes that have the main unit downstairs and you just run around with the tube and head sticking it into the recepticles and all the dust and hairs get sucked downstairs in the basement.

another good one is the 'rainbow' vacs. they use water to filter out the hairs. they do a damn good job with pet hairs, better than electrolux. same price tho.

"Over the rainbow" or "Who left the vac by the door?"

<another good one is the 'rainbow' vacs> Yep!!!!

We have owned one for years. It is absolutely the best for removing cat hair. Nothing escapes the water trap.(Cleaning it out can be gross though... )

As you can see below, we really need that ability! Don

Yeah, Larry, but is it All Wheel Drive?

Alright, since the usual suspects have gone all O/T again, let me explain Vac-Facts, one of my specialties, as you all know my propensity to suck down certain liquids.

Suction is overrated as a measure of a vac's ability to remove dirt, etc. from the depths of a carpet. We've all seen the ads of the vac dejour picking up the bowling ball. If a gnat were sitting upon said bowling ball when the vac was turned on, he (or she) would not necessarily be devoured. An opening MUST be present somewhere near the end of the suction tube, to allow air flow from the outside to create a stream of "wind" to be pulled inside. Forgive my use of arcane engineering terms here.
The secret to dirt removal is the vibration created by the spinning brush, and is why the upright, or the canister with the powered extension wand is superior to the bowling ball sucker on carpet.
Now, the rotating cylinder should NOT be made of metal. Metal generates static electricity, & interferes with the collection of dust. Wood - Yes, WOOD, is the preferred material for the cylinder.
Also - those uprights with 3 or 4 adjustment levels are inferior. Only an INFINATE level adjuster will adapt exactly right to provide the proper suction for the myriad of carpet materials available today.

This a paraphrase of a sales pitch I listened to about twenty-five years ago. Yes - I bought the machine, & it still lives up to its claims. It's the Royal upright I mentioned before. It has NOTHING in common with the cheesy plastic Royal Dirt-Devils sold today. This baby is solid metal - and wood.

Kirby? Hah! Overrated!

Ron (suckin' on a box now).

Joe,
Actually, Electrolux is European...Swedish, methinks; but with a long history and huge presence in the US. They were one of the first with door-to-door sales here, too.

Ron,

The core of the beater brush in the Electrolux nozzle was wood with nylon bristles.
You are not correct about the meatal core brushes generating static electricity. It is the movement of the brisles on the carpet which geneates the static. The metal core of the brush only conducts this charge to other parts of the vacuum. If the vacuums wheels are of static conductive polymer, then the charge will disipate back into the carpet. If not, the static charge will be attracted to the magnetic field of the motor and be disipated through the ground wiring.

The wheels on the canister are not driven. The drive power rating for the canister will be one (1) LP (Larry Power) or one (1) RP (Rosie Power). The nozzle is pulled forward by the rotating brush so I guess it's BP, Bristle Powered.

PS: Forget about sucking & blowing. Concentrate on blue crustations and SVXes.

Don,

Standard model no good for you guys. You need to go for the catalytic one.
