I have a Question for U
... wondering why you build wooden houses instead of cement houses. I know that this question is never related to cars in any way and some may find it ridiculous, but i always wondered why most of the houses in the states are made of wood... is it cheaper? but requires more maintenance.. it is not safer than cement in terms of earthquakes, natural phenomena, fire... why you do it in that way?

In some areas, there are many houses made of cement (walls). Most large structures are made of steel and some are made of cement.

In Alaska in particular, all sand based products ie cement are monopolized by AK Sand and Gravel, who by popular opinion is considered crap.
Aside from the relatively small amount imported through Lowes and other hardware home improvement retailers it is widely unavailable in decent quality. So, given the number of earthquakes we have a cement house would likely crumble and fall apart much like the roads. Houses of wood on the other hand, and trust me I'm a home inspector in training, last MUCH longer and require little maintenace if they are properly ventilated. I've seen houses in great condition, with the only problem being a cracked foundations of, guess what, concrete blocks. One building in particular had a good sized crawlspace, but the conrete wall appeared to be leaning inward, so it was brace with wood beams. By the way, something I learned working at Lowes, cement is not concrete nor is it suitable for building anything tall that may be supporting a good deal of weight. ---------------- Now in other states, Florida for example, I lived in a concrete house. In that region so prone to extrmely high winds and torrential rains, a concrete building would outlast a wooden one by many many years provided weathering was equal and somewhat substantial. (:

Wood is more energy efficient vs. steel framing or concrete from start to finish. It is cheaper and costs less to prepare wood, and in the long run it is cheaper to heat and cool a wood home.

aha, now i get it, but in the movies (Sorry guys, i have seen USA only through movies) all of the houses are made out of Wood. You have seen what Katrina did to houses, no roofs, no walls, no everything... if those small houses are build by cement they wouldn't have been affected by many natural disasters like this... nor termites, nor fire... also wood makes noise and let you hear things that must be confidential in nature... so you see, small houses are meant to be made out of cement. My dad is a civil engineer, he designed our mountain villa in a way to be not so cold in the winter, nor hot in the summer. He inserted inside the walls and ceilings a one inch of isolated yellow foam used for generators and stuff... he also put underneath the brick plates on the roof, also some of this material.... I prefer to live up there instead of the city side.
