transmission dropping out of 4th

Either 4th is dropping out at 60 to 80 on slight hills or could it be the torque converter un locking? It is only about 500 rpm so I wouldn't think it is dropping a whole gear. How can I trouble shoot the torque converter in the car?

Re: transmission dropping out of 4th

Sounds like the torque converter unlocking and locking. Pretty normal in my experience.

Re: transmission dropping out of 4th

If it is the toque converter, it is doing much more than it used to and I have driven it for more than 200000 miles. What would wear in it? or is there an electrical signal that goes to the torque converter?

Re: transmission dropping out of 4th

Mine is doing the same thing but right at 80 kph (50 mph). I was thinking maybe the throttle position sensor had something to do with it.

Re: transmission dropping out of 4th

I have been reading the big factory manual and the trans computer has some imputs before sending a signal to the duty solenoid B.
Vehicle speed sensors 1 and 2
engine speed
throttle opening
ATF temperature
what gear or range is selected

Also it wants to know if cruise control is in use. I always suspected that lock up stayed engaged more when cruise control was in use. I haven't nailed that down at all.

Fault codes are indicated via the Power light flashing.

Re: transmission dropping out of 4th

I am going to get my spare trans rebuilt and use a new torque converter this time. Anyone have a source for a new or rebuilt torque converter?

Re: transmission dropping out of 4th

Sounds like a tps issue. If it's reading a higher tps it will unlock the tc in expectation of heavy throttle input.

On a side note, I put a fwd Impreza trans I put in my fwd svx and I used the Impreza converter. Turns out the converter would lock only once and would later unlock and not lock again until I cycled the ignition. Never figured out why it did that but putting an svx converter in it later fixed it. Not sure on your situation if it's related

Re: transmission dropping out of 4th

Here's a cheaper fix. OEM TPS in no longer available but here's a solution:https://speedyefi.com/product/tps-ad...VvpUpxx-LZfH8U

$75.

Re: transmission dropping out of 4th

If the Florida one really is the right one, I am interested. I better call to verify.

Re: transmission dropping out of 4th

Yea no idea if that's going to have the correct stall on that converter but it "should" work. When I had the wrong one in my car it was visibly smaller in girth
